How to look normal in photos: stop trying so hard.

I like to start with a game, or a little prompt for movement. For example, “Look at the person who is the GRUMPIEST in the morning.” We usually get some giggles and everyone is looking at someone. I’ll keep asking these questions, and when everyone is laughing, I’ll say “Now look here!” and everyone looks at me with genuine smiles. Your personality comes out, I know when the snap, and then we get the best results.

Next might be a random dance party, sneak attack the adults, or whatever new tt trend is big, I’ll match you with what you like to do to have fun. I’m there to find your personality and enhance it.

Photos don’t have to be hard! They really can be that simple.

Little-known fact: you don’t actually have to be looking at the camera to get good wedding portraits.
Editorial poses don’t have to be your thing if they make you feel stiff and awkward. Laid-back and natural posing can be just as memorable.

She originally booked a family session as a Father’s Day gift for him… and then they got engaged. 💍

So we turned their session into a little two-in-one and made sure to capture some engagement photos while we were at it. And of course, I said yes when she asked if we could!

I’ll share the family photos another day, but for now, these needed their own post. 🥰

They’re in their forties, but neither one has ever been married. Leslie and Matt had dated other people, but nothing felt special enough. They didn’t rush, lower expectations, or force any other relationship for the sake of getting married, they just let time lead them to each other.
That hug in the first picture? Right after they’d walked back down the aisle, Leslie said, “We’re married!” in the most joyous voice and threw her arms around Matt. That will forever be one of my favorite captured moments.

Sister Gradeless is off! She’s beginning an 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Southern California. She will be spending her time teaching others about Jesus Christ and His love for us. What an amazing journey she is starting!

Let me tell you a little secret--your house does NOT need to look like a designer magazine for an in-home newborn session.

It doesn't even need to be spotless. With a brand-new baby, the last thing you need to worry about is deep-cleaning or trying to hide the diaper bins and bottles everywhere. We only need a single good window and a cleared off couch, bed, or in the nursery. I will literally slide a laundry basket just out of the frame so all you have to do is sit back and enjoy life as it's happening. Capturing cute moments does NOT have to be stressful and does not have to be done with strict conditions in order to work.

Black and white, or color?

What's your opinion on black and white photos? When I offer black and white photos, I never use them in place of a color photo. If I don't have every photo in your gallery with a color and black and white option, you will most definitely have every photo in color and some with black and white as well.

To me, black and white photos add a lot of drama, and it completely changes the vibe of a photo! I like to be able to offer both options rather than making that decision for my clients, but I know a lot of photographers use their own artistic judgment when selecting which photos they want to deliver as color or black and white.

What's your take? Do you like black and white photos? Which option would you pick from these two if you HAD to choose?
