My heart is full and I am completely exhausted today! Yesterday was my fifth annual Dahlias for Good event. Over the span of two hours, nearly 400 dahlias tubers went out in the world to be grown for the specific purpose of spreading kindness! I shared the and invited others to join. I loved seeing how others would use flowers to spread kindness!

A HUGE shout out to my fellow flower farmers who donated tubers for this event!

I am so, so grateful for and her girls who have completely jumped in to be my support system for all things AND donated tubers well!

I have a few tubers left - so if you’d like to grow in kindness this year, reach out! Local pick up only.

I’m absolutely the crazy plant lady that talks to her plants like they are her pets! These dahlias went in the ground on 5/17 and about 40% have made their above ground debut. Everything was sprouted or eyed up at planting . I had some pop in under 3 days, others will be another week. Everyone in their own time!

I know it’s hard to be patient, but please don’t dig up your tubers to check on them - you’ll actually slow them down! My rule is 3 weeks - and even then, I just gently bush the soil to the side until I get to the crown. Often times you will find a sprout on the way down.

You may notice that the top of my soil looks really dry (it’s been an unusually dry spring here in the PNW). That top layer of soil isn’t any concern to sprouting tubers. What they care about is having moisture where they sit. So, before you pull out the hose thinking they need a drink, stick your finger down in that dirt 2 to 3 inches and see if there’s still moisture there. If there is, put the hose down! Until tubers have an established root system they can’t take water and you risk rotting your tubers.

How are your dahlias doing? I’m here if you have questions or need help!

This year, 5% of tuber sales supported , and I’ve also set aside tubers to gift as part of Dahlias for Good—a little tradition I’ve shared with our community for the past five years. If you’d love to grow dahlias to give bouquets this season, or know a school or community garden that could use some dahlias, I’d love to share.

Lesson for the day -
Do what works for you. I’m still recovering from a hip injury last March and my physical therapist wasn’t happy with me doing so much bending to plant. But the dahlias have to get planted…. So we comprised on shovel work to limit bending. I grow in raised beds and my soil is fluffy- so making a ditch with shovel was easier than individual holes AND was a ton faster! Win Win! I got 128 in the ground today before my body said enough!

Today marks the debut of the new flower cart (a potting station). All tubers are $3(mystery), $5 or $10 sprouted up and ready to plant! With deals this good you know you have room for one more! 😉 Inventory will change weekly as I plant out myself! Stand will be open 10-6 Saturday & Sunday for the next 2 weeks. After that, we will see what’s left! Let me know if you are interested in seeing flower starts on the stand as well.

I am honored to be part of . I spent most of today at our founder, Deanna’s farm () giving away tubers, educating and helping people join our mission. With all the craziness in the world lately, it felt AMAZING to spend the day rooted in kindness and helping others learn to grow and give flowers. She hung this chalkboard and asked people to add how they would be spreading kindness with the tubers they received. It was so beautiful. So today this is your reminder that that good does still exist.
Will you join us in making the world a better place thru flowers? Comment “yes” and I will (not a bot) send you the link to get started. It’s free!

Time to check in and celebrate the growth of our baby dahlias! All of these seeds were started at five days ago. As you can see, just like everything in nature, everything is growing at its own rate - and that’s perfectly OK! Let’s remember that lesson for us too - OK?

1) close up of dahlia seeds
2) full seed tray - Woo Hoo! lots of germination happening!!
3) a look at what germinated - these will get potted up in seed blocks and put under grow lights (heat mats aren’t needed) / vs those still viable - give ‘em a fresh damp paper towel and back to the warm spot on top of the fridge.
4) spent seed pod / when sorting your dahlia seeds the ones that are still viable will be firm and almost feel like they have a belly. If they look frayed like this- they have done their job and supported one of the babies!
5) video of when ideally I like to plant them up - I like to get them at the smaller stage because as they grow, the roots start to develop and often will weave into the paper towel and become hard to remove. If this happens, I recommend using a toothpick in slowly and gently working it out.
6) Vision of what’s to come. Dahlia seedlings planted on 3/21 from demos at the in person sale.

What questions do you have? Did you start your seeds?

There are still seeds left for purchase on the website! link in Bio.

Growing dahlias from seed is one of my favorite things. Dahlias only replicate genetically by tuber or cuttings. All seed produces a new, never before seen bee created (some hybridizers manually pollinate) wonder of a bloom that has never before been seen!

There are many ways to go about it - but this is how I have found to be the most successful for me. It’s commonly know as the paper towel method.

What you need:
Dahlia seed (still available online - link in bio)
Paper towel, blue shop towel or old sheet section
Water
Waterproof container or baggie

Moisten your cloth so thoroughly damp, but not dripping. Evenly spread seeds on half the cloth so as they germinate, they’re not touching each other. Fold cloth over like an envelope, sealing in the seeds.
Lay cloth flat into the container and seal. Place in a warm dark location. Make sure you check daily for moisture and germination. Once germinated move into soil blocks or seed trays in place under grow lights or in your sunniest window. Keep well watered.

Let me know what questions you have.
