What’s the chance that these beauties make it until 2am and two flights today from the west to the east coast? 😳😂

Almost all 20 made it! Lakeview Peach Fuzz, Versa, Sandia Claire and Bertha, Elvira, even several orchid-style dahlias…despite only being wrapped in wet paper towel. Can’t believe it.

Capturing sleeping bees never gets old in its magic-watching the life cycle of flowers.

Bees continue to come back to the same blossom every night, and sometimes 2-3 bees sleep on the same flower (see 4th in this series) despite the flower transitioning towards its end. Sometimes they seem to be hanging on by a thread. They are faithful to that particular flower until petals fall, one by one until there’s nothing left; touching and beautiful with a tinge of sadness, especially as summer season moves into fall. They particularly cling to these dark red chocolate cosmos, and you can see their lifecycle here.

A wonderful grief book is from Leo Buscaglia called The Fall of Freddie the Leaf. It’s particularly helpful for kids to prepare for or cope with a death. Leo perfectly captured this concept as a means of support and education 🧡🍁

I was today-years old when I learned that just like bees sleep in flowers (and usually the same one each night, sometimes as a family of bees together on one flower), ladybugs do the same!!

Who else knew this? Here in the PNW they sleep in groups around apple stems, waking up with sun and warmer temps.

So we relocated about a dozen to the roses to eat aphids and here’s a bunch of the girls! Aren’t they adorable?!🥰

Being out early and late-you get to see small, amazing details…

Applesauce time! The Gravenstein and Akane trees are loaded this year. The house smells so good!!!!

We wash, core, chunk and cook them down with water, sugar to taste. Then put the cooled applesauce in freezer boxes to enjoy the rest of the year. Love that our 16 year old can competently make it all by himself - it’s hours of work!

The blueberries and cherries were also prolific - 9 blueberry “trees” have yielded more than 70 #.

Ferncliff Thunder and an unnamed, imperfect but interesting colored seedling! Growing almost 300 different kinds of dahlias plus a wide variety of other seasonal flowers.
