We were supposed to spend this day in the Wichita Mountains.

Instead, we found ourselves making a little bit of magic in a hospital lobby.

These two are outdoors people. Hunters. Give them a little dirt, a wide-open sky and somewhere wild to wander, and they’re happy. So a hospital was definitely not the backdrop we had pictured for their maternity session.

But life doesn’t always ask what we pictured.

Sometimes it just hands you something different and says, here you go.

So we made the most of it.

There were no mountain views or tall grass blowing in the wind. Her accessories were hospital bracelets and IV lines.

And somehow, it was still beautiful.

This season of their lives wasn’t happening somewhere pretty and picturesque. It was happening right here. In this room. In the waiting. In the uncertainty. In the quiet moments before they got to meet this little baby.

And I think there’s something pretty damn beautiful about that.

About making something meaningful out of the place you never planned to be.

Maybe that’s what these photographs will mean years from now.

Not the session that didn’t happen how we wanted; but the story of how they loved this baby through whatever came their way. 🤍

Each year, I get the opportunity to photograph several events for AFR, including their Youth Summit. This July, I watched these five young campers stand up, give their speeches, and work hard to earn the votes that would make them the next AFR Youth Council.

And Friday, I got to photograph them again—but this time, as the council I watched be elected. 🥹

These kids are everything you hope to see in the next generation of agriculture. They’re kind, outgoing, hardworking, and natural leaders among their peers. They put in the work, stepped outside their comfort zones, and earned the opportunity to spend the next year serving the AFR organization and the youth around them.

As a photographer, getting to document that journey is such a cool part of what I do. I’ll get to see them again at conference in February, and then back at Youth Summit next July, where I’ll watch a new council be elected and another group of young leaders begin their year of service.

Getting to photograph the moments is one thing. Getting to watch these kids grow into the people they’re becoming is something really special. 🌾🤍

For the last few years, I’ve had so many of you tell me that you loved the idea of fall photos—but wanted something a little more neutral and timeless.
