Something other than ships! Here's some of my Viking style weapons and a shield I made in my favorite color scheme. Axes were deliberately made with the minimum amount of metal as it was scarce and valuable. I plan to make new handles for the axes and maybe reshape the metal heads if i find a forge.

New style of detachable dragon figurehead in the making. I wanted to be able to add / swap / remove heads and tails on my ships and they also need to be somewhat consistent, cool af, and not take forever like the hand carved ones i've been doing. I used a design from the Oseberg burial, freehanded it, cut it out of pine with an ultrasonic knife and then made a mirror image of it. The 2 mirrors will form a wedge / triangle (like the cross section of my curved keels) and be easily installed or removed, maybe magnets or an interference fit.

Latest complete ship! Can't believe this is #7... there aren't many pursuits that I've sgayed with for this long (7 years actually). Pics from prow to stern (front to back). Check out the homemade birch candle burn timers. I'm getting more satisfied with my creations with each iteration. The base also has some nice details like braided cotton edging and a rune circle. Here i'm showing the steps in adding a trenail, a traditional wooden nail to my keel joint. The 'nail' is tapered and the holes on either side of the keel sections are slightly different sizes, one smaller and the other larger. Once the skinny end is through, it gets split with a tiny wooden wedge to lock the trenail in place. What i've done will be clearer once it's complete. A trenail was a clever historical fastener as iron was ususally tough to come by and quite valuable.

Assembling the base for my latest Viking ship. I had some white tile, and a while ago, i had engraved a rune circle on a cut piece of slate. I used clear marbles and mini copper rings (made from electrical wire for chainmail projects) to make risers between the layers which compensate for surfaces that aren't totally flat or parallel to each other. Since the slate and the tile aren't exactly flat, it can be tough to get an attractive but consistent gap between them. Slate is such an evocative color and texture for Viking items. The gray green brown blue with organic layers reminiscent of waves makes a fantastic backdrop for a ship out of water.

Very pleased with these completed shields. It's rare for me to feel satisfied with my artistic work so it's really refreshing to exceed expectations. The chemically blackened aluminum foil which i rolled the shields in gives such a rugged primitive look and the scaling between the thumb tack amd the shield diameter finally looks right.

Tea treated and untreated shields dipped in rusty vinegar. 1 shield given the shou sugi ban treatment with fire. 3 shields dipped in rusty vinegar with no tea treatment. Overall, the tea def helps by increasing the surface tannins on the shield, which is what reacts with the iron oxide / rust.

My process for curving the sails. I make a water and cornstarch mix and heat it up. Then I brush it on a sail while it's flat. Squeegee it to remove excess starch and hang it on my rolled up yoga mat to dry. Parchment paper keeps my surfaces clean.
