Introducing Motif resident artist Jacqui Mateo
Jacqui Mateo weave stories with their sound, shifting between the deep, the soulful, and the hypnotic.
Born and raised in Chicago, Jacqui Mateo grew up immersed in music from house to hip-hop, jazz to blues. Classically-trained from an early age, the two played and produced individually for years before a serendipitous glance at Smartbar collided their worlds.
Their unique sound continually evolves as they blend classic house sounds with minimal grooves, emotive melodies, and a dash of jazz and old school rave energy. As a duo they’ve played around the world from Berlin to Burning Man, performing alongside artists such as Jimi Jules, Julya Karma, Lee Burridge, Monolink, and Satori.
Outside of Jacqui Mateo, Jacqueline is the ethereal cellist, vocalist, and sound meditation facilitator Jac Høja ( ). She has organized retreats around the world, toured as a member of Unders’ band underneath, and played live performances at Burning Man on Mayan Warrior and Maxa. Matthew, a trained violinist, is the enigmatic ambient and hypnotic techno artist Saiklōn ( ). Their solo projects recently fused to debut an ambient hybrid set at Fusion Festival.
The duo also confounded , a community of 90+ artists & creatives in Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, and beyond. With REVIVE, they have produced immersive underground events, supported the release of a mix series and three compilation albums, and organized a creative retreat in New Mexico.
