Whiskey Adventure Day 9. This gem comes from I absolutely love their single barrel bourbons and ryes. They name them based on the tasting notes they get. This one, Orange Cream Soda and the proof is 106. When in Louisville this distillery should definitely be on your list to visit. Stop by and see my friend ! I grabbed this bottle back in September at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival so you might not be able to grab this exact one. But they always have some delicious options available.

Whiskey Advent day 8. 1792 Sweet Wheat. This one comes from Barton’s Distillery in Bardstown, Ky. This is a soft, approachable bourbon coming in at 91.2 proof. Whiskey Adventure Day 7. Playing a little catch up today! Private Selects can be a fun adventure. I’m usually a fan of the now retired mocha stave or ones that are high in the French Mendiant stave (think chocolate). However if you know me you know how much I love anything churro!!

Whiskey Advent Day 6. This is a special single barrel that came from the in Texas. It’s a 16 year old “Buff Turkey” barrel. These highly sought after single barrels were barrels that were produced at Buffalo Trace for Wild Turkey. In 2009 Campari Group acquired Wild Turkey from Pernod Ricard. In 2011 they invested $50 million to expand the distillery. It was in this time of expansion that’s concerns arose about not being able to produce enough bourbon. So an unlikely partnership with Buffalo Trace was formed. They used the traditional Wild Turkey mashbill and the barrels were aged at Wild Turkey. However they decided not to use these barrels and they were sold off to various NDPs (non distiller producers). This bottle comes in at 122 proof

Whiskey Advent Day 5. “Sister Cities” Kentucky Straight Whiskey finished with Japanese Mizunara and French Oak. Lexington,Ky where RD1 calls home, has two sister cities, Shinhidaka, Japan and Deauville, France. This whiskey is a tribute to those two places. The base bourbon is a 5 year old bourbon (mashbill 70% corn, 21% rye, 9% mb). After aging in new charred oak barrels, French Oak “necklaces” are then introduced for finishing. The next step is to blend that bourbon with a 7 year old bourbon (75% c, 13% r, 12% mb) and an 8 year old rye whiskey (51% r, 37% c, 13% mb). The final “finishing” touch is to introduce lightly toasted Japanese Mizunara staves, making this whiskey quite the cultural expression!
