For a long time, I did not know how to answer that confidently... without being offended, quite frankly.
When I first started Honey Events, being called a âballoon artistâ made me so uncomfortable. Not because there is anything wrong with the title, but because of the way I knew how some people saw this business.
I tknew some people heard âballoonsâ and pictured something silly. A clown. A cute little side gig. Just another girl on Facebook. Another girl trying to make quick money on Instagram. Something fun, but not something serious.
And because I already had those insecurities in my own mind, every little comment felt bigger.
âOh, you do those little balloon things, right?â
To someone else, it may have been an innocent question. But what I heard was, âThis is small. This isnât real. This is a joke. This is just a hobby.â
The truth is, no one could see what I could see yet.
They couldnât see the vision I had for Honey Events. They couldnât see the hours spent learning proportions, color placement, structure, installation, design, logistics, pricing, and all of the work that happens long before the first balloon ever goes up.
They couldnât see how much it meant to me to take an empty space and turn it into something that makes people stop, smile, celebrate, and remember a moment.
For me, this was never just about balloons.
It was about building something of my own. It was about creating a business that could grow with my life and my family. It was about taking an idea that existed only in my head and working until other people could finally see it too.
And somewhere along the way, my perspective FINALLY changed.
Now, when someone calls me a balloon artist, I donât shrink from it.
I own it. Yup, sure am!
I am an event artist. I specialize in using color, shape, scale, and design to bring someoneâs vision to life. I create something out of nothing, and I think that is pretty special.
This particular setup makes that title feel even more meaningful.
Every year, I get to create the balloons and photo booth for this elementary schoolâs art show. As a former teacher, I love that my work still gives me opportunities to stay connected to children and schools. And there is something really full-circle about using my own creativity to help celebrate theirs.
This is a day when these students get to proudly show the world what they made, how they think, and what they imagined. I get to create a small part of the environment that tells them their art is worth displaying and celebrating.
So yes, Iâm an artist.
And Iâm finally proud to say exactly what kind. đšđ
