As a proud son, nephew, and grandson to veterans of the US Marine Corps and Army, I want to thank all veterans for their service and share the story of a remarkable veteran I met while working as Cup Guy in 2023. I wrote this back then though never shared it publicly, but now feels like the right time:
“This is a photo of me and the one and only George Kasotis.
George has seen and done it all.
I had the pleasure to sit and chat with him for almost an hour during a Veteran’s day celebration at the Marion County fair today. He’s 91 years young, a Korean War Veteran(like my Grandfather) and Restaurant owner here in Marion, Ohio for almost 70 years. He saw my juggling act inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum on the fair grounds between my Cup Guy sets. Later that day he approached me, told me he’s watched performers for almost a century from New York to LA and that I had the best footwork he’s ever seen. A generous compliment from someone who’s seen as much as George.
We sat and chatted for the better part of an hour. Born in Greece in 1932, he came to the United States in his mother’s arms through Ellis Island amidst the depression. In the early 50’s Barnum & Bailey passed through town performing in this very coliseum we are sitting in. The ringmaster was Greek and came to George’s family’s restaurant and taught him to juggle. One of his friends (married with two kids) ran off with the girl from the equestrian act. George got a phone call from him two weeks later in New Orleans. It was quite the scandal.
Very shortly after, George was drafted and served honorably in Korea from 1952-53. He is a Purple Heart recipient, surviving a close call with a landmine and being swept off a bridge during a monsoon. While recovering from his injuries in Japan, He met Marilyn Monroe and Joe Dimaggio, who were on their honeymoon.
When he came home he picked back up and kept running his businesses and performing in community theater. He described himself a Greek restraunter in a sea of Italians. The mob ran things, but he had a good relationship and kept his head down. That being said, George had a whole bunch of creative names and joke for his Italian friends that I will leave to your imagination. He spoke passionately about his Greek Orthodox faith, his love for his wife and country, and his desire to make the world a better place. He says he did his part serving in Korea and still serves as a precinct committeeman for The Marion county Democratic Party.”
I was thinking of him this Veteran’s day, and I did a quick search and found that he passed away earlier this year, aged 93.
Thank you for your service, your stories, and your joy, George, and may you rest in peace.
