Da Pupule Kanakas Catering starts with3 inspiring culinary students with one goal in mind, and that was to share good food for people to enjoy. We came up with our name which is translated from the Hawaiian Language as "The Crazy Men" because we felt that it not only defined who we are as individuals, but also defines our values as a family or "Ohana". Ohana can be defined as a group of both clos

ely and distantly related people who share nearly everything whether it be work, food or even status. We came to a conclusion that we each wanted to share a part in this new found family of ours and share our family ties not only with each other, but with others as well.

Hey everyone!!! sorry we have been MIA, but school and work has been taking up our lives as I am sure you all understand, little update. Our Hawaiian style menu has been approved by a very very lucky bride and we did a tasting just yesterday and she couldn't decide at first what she wanted because she loved it all, but we came down to a final menu for her and we are booked!!! Also I am now working on another wedding menu, this one is a Mexican style, and a little more informal but it should be fun! This is afterall, is what I grew up with, so its always nice to cook the food you grew up with for other people and to see their own take on it. EXCITED!!!!!!!

Did you know that antibiotics are administered to our conventionally raised livestock to promote faster growth and mitigate for unsanitary living conditions, especially in Combined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)?! According to the National Resources Defense Council (2011), approximately 70% of all antibiotics used in the United States are administered to healthy livestock at low doses.

This irresponsible and immoral practice has contributed to an epidemic of antibiotic-resistant infections in America. The CDC estimates that 2 million antibiotic-resistant infections and 90,000 deaths occur annually. Children and the immunocompromised are especially vulnerable to this health risk.

Say NO to the use of antibiotics in our livestock by purchasing from farm agricultural sources that do not use them! Read your labels and buy wisely. Look for "USDA Organic" or "raised without hormones or antibiotics" on the package. Visit your local farmer and/or attend a farmers' market near you! If you live in the City, you can also google the company to find out more information. Get to know who produces your food and what you are putting into your body. You owe it to yourself, your children, and your families.

Consumers Beware: California's Proposition 37, which sought mandatory labeling of all GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) food, was defeated this past November with major influence from Monsanto (a company with enormous investment in GMO technology and products).

GMOs are generally transgenic plant products including soybean, corn, canola, and cotton seed oil which have been engineered for faster growth, resistance to pathogens, production of extra nutrients, or any other beneficial purpose.

Most people are unaware that GMOs have been a part of our nation's food supply since 1994. This is because there currently is no requirement for these foods to be labeled.

The American Academy of Environmental Medicine has concluded from several animal studies that "there is more than a casual association between GM foods and adverse health effects" and that "GM foods pose a serious health risk in the areas of toxicology, allergy and immune function, reproductive health, and metabolic, physiologic and genetic health."

Since limited evidence exists about the long term effects of GMOs on human health, the safety of these foods remains questionable. Labeling would allow consumers to make informed decisions on whether or not to buy them.

What are your thoughts on labeling GMO foods?

We missed the pictures of the appetizers, but this was the main course, as you can see it was a simple buffet style for about 35-40 people. The deserts were prepared by Kari Krajanowski, owner/operator of "Kraj Kakes" and believe me, they were AMAZING!!!

Special shout out to Christina Galluzzo, thanks for your help last night hommie!!! Another to Kari Krajanowski, for totally kicking ass on her deserts! and for lending DPK a hand when it came down to crunch time. We had our first event for 2013 and I was pleased to see that everyone was genuinely pleased with the meal (even the vegetarian who just got back from Hawaii tried the kahlua pork and said it was better than the one he had on the island) And you know what makes it better?? KIlo aka Mike Graham, stopped me and asked if we could say a prayer before we headed out to our gig, I was more than ecstatic, I am so glad and so blessed to have him not only as a friend but as a a partner in this endeavor, it truly makes my life easier when the people you work with have a relationship with a force higher than ourselves. All in all, this is one happy Mexican, had alot of people asking if we travel to LA and if we do vegan and vegetarian as well (heck yeah we do!!!)
