Bluebonnet Garden Club chose the residence of Steve Nelson located at 2381 Gun and Rod Circle to receive the Yard of the Month award for May, 2026.

The well-maintained long curved lines of the front gardens serve to artfully complement the stacked stone architecture of the Nelson residence. Curvilinear lines in landscapes create natural, flowing, and intimate spaces by utilizing sweeping curves and serpentine shapes, often mimicking nature to contrast with rigid, straight architectural lines. Common applications include meandering pathways, soft-edged garden beds and structural features like curved walls, which encourage exploration and movement. In the landscaping world, good lines mean good designs.

At the Nelson House, the use of Asian Jasmine groundcover forms a curvy line drawing the eye toward a stately white Natchez Crepe Myrtle that serves as a focal point guiding visitors toward the front door of the house. Knockout Roses in both red and pink were used as a favorite flowering plant of Peggy’s. Interspersed with the roses are Boxwoods and African Iris. We were told that the well-shaped live oak in the back yard is most likely around 200 years old.

“Other holidays repose upon the past; Arbor Day proposes for the future.” — J. Sterling Morton
Arbor Day is an annual holiday dedicated to planting, nurturing, and celebrating trees, traditionally observed on the last Friday in April. Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, Arbor Day encourages environmental stewardship, sustainable communities, and recognition of the lasting benefits trees provide through cleaner air, healthier water, shade, beauty, and habitat for wildlife.
Trees not only shape our landscapes; they shape our future.
We invite you to learn more about Arbor Day and its rich history through the Arbor Day Foundation. https://www.arborday.org/celebrate/history
Attached are a few photos of Arbor Day trees planted by the club over the years. A beautiful reminder of how small acts today can grow into lasting legacies for generations to come.

In honor of Arbor Day 2026, Kathy Carter of the Bluebonnet Garden Club partnered with the Herb Society of America Pioneer Unit and Trees of Central Texas to plant a tree in the Sensory Garden at Brenham Elementary School. Trees of Central Texas graciously donated a crepe myrtle so elementary students could learn about flowering trees firsthand.
The garden provides Brenham Elementary students with the opportunity to engage their five senses, see, smell, touch, taste, and hear, with the plants around them. We appreciate all the members of both garden clubs, along with Trees of Central Texas, for their efforts to help students learn about trees while understanding and celebrating Arbor Day.

Our Butterfly Garden at Brenham Elementary is in full bloom! A huge thank you to our amazing “Weekly Weeders” who work so hard to keep the garden beautiful. Their dedication to pulling weeds, caring for the plants, and preparing the space has made way for gorgeous blooms and a welcoming habitat for butterflies, pollinators and beneficial garden creatures like snails and worms!

Yard of the Month is Back in Full Swing!

April’s Yard of the Month has been awarded to 700 Walnut Hill Drive.

This lovely mid-century modern home and its surrounding gardens blend in perfect harmony, with the original landscape design serving as a valuable guide as the garden continues to evolve. Built in the early 1950s, the home still features several of its original plantings, thoughtfully preserved by the current homeowners, who are avid gardeners dedicated to planning, nurturing, and maintaining their landscape with care and intention.

The front flower beds showcase a beautiful mix of azaleas, holly fern, Louisiana iris, Indian hawthorn, and a striking Texas mountain laurel tree. The backyard gardens are especially outstanding, offering vibrant color and seasonal interest throughout. Bloodgood Japanese maple trees provide rich foliage, complemented by amaryllis and Hinckley’s columbine in full bloom.

A diverse and impressive collection of plants fills the garden, including begonias, irises, poppies, cosmos, yarrow, daylilies, oakleaf hydrangea, Mexican firespike, Rose of Sharon, hardy hibiscus, and camellia sasanqua. Mature trees further enhance the landscape, highlighted by a magnificent crepe myrtle and a nearby spreading fig tree. A charming kitchen garden provides fresh vegetables throughout the growing season.

This exquisite garden has truly stood the test of time and continues to flourish, reflecting both the home’s history and the passion of its dedicated caretakers.

April’s Yard of the Month was chosen by Scottie Davis, Betsy Spiller and Debi Meschwitz.

A special highlight to Rebecca Ehlert for the beautiful arrangement she created for Unity Theatre! Placed in the lobby to welcome guests for the play Bloomsday by Steven Dietz, it was a wonderful touch to complement the performance.
