4x4 road math for your elopement timeline: 6 miles does NOT mean 15 minutes.

On an old mining road, 6 miles can be a two hour drive. Easily. So we pad everything.

But here's the thing, the drive isn't the obstacle between you and the spot. It kind of is the day. The pull offs, the snack breaks, your dog's ears flapping out the window, that one song you forgot was on the playlist.

So build the time in. You're going to want it.

I only work in Colorado. Partly because I love it here.

Mostly because the weather app is a friggen liar.

It'll say 20% chance of rain and you'll get hailed on above treeline at 1pm. It'll say thunderstorms all day and the sky will be completely clear by 9am. It is wrong constantly, and it's wrong in specific, predictable ways.

Which you only really learn by being out in it for thirteen years and getting it wrong yourself a bunch of times first.

How to write your vows: don't start by writing.

I know. But hear me out. What actually happens when you open a blank doc is you stare at it for twenty minutes, type and delete the same sentence four times, and then go do literally anything else.

So skip that part. Open your notes app and just dump. Bullet points. Half sentences. The dumb inside joke. No editing, no making it sound nice, that comes way later.

And then say it out loud. If it sounds weird coming out of your mouth, cut it. That's basically the whole editing process.

"Who reads their vows first?"

Nobody thinks about this until you're standing there and it's time to start and you're both just going "you go." "no YOU go." "okay at the same time?" (that never works.)

So here are your actual options. Coin toss. Rock paper scissors. Thumb war.

I've watched all three happen and the thumb war was the single best ceremony opener I have ever seen. I think about it about once a month.

Crested Butte is my favorite place in Colorado to photograph and it is not actually about the wildflowers.

I mean, the wildflowers are insane. Columbine, lupine, paintbrush, all going off at 11,000 feet like it's their job. That part is real.

But what actually gets me is that it's a really good TOWN. The coffee shop has a dog water bowl out front. You can walk everywhere. Strangers say hi on the trail.

And the practical stuff is almost too easy. Most small elopements don't need a permit at all, and you can drive straight up to Gothic Valley, Emerald Lake, Lake Irwin, Kebler Pass. No six mile approach. No sweating through your clothes.

Somehow still underrated. I cannot explain it.

"Is it still a real wedding if it's just the two of us?"

I get asked this constantly. And the legal answer is boring and perfect: your Colorado marriage license is a legal document in all 50 states and internationally. Same paperwork as the couple with 200 guests and a five tier cake. Same everything!

But that's not really what people are asking. What they're actually asking is whether it's going to FEEL real.

So. Having watched hundreds of couples do this now: it hits harder when nobody's watching. Every single time.

If I ever moved to the San Juans, I'd live in Ridgway. There!! I said it!

It's 15 minutes from Ouray, quieter, more affordable, and somehow has the most iconic views of the whole range from every direction, and everyone just drives through it on their way to somewhere famous?? BFFR.

Meanwhile it's just sitting there being the best base camp in southwest Colorado.

Anyway. I said what I said!

The 6 person rule that makes FREE Colorado elopements possible!!

Most National Forest and BLM land falls under the Explore Act. Translation: no permit needed if you keep your group to 6 or fewer, skip the setup (no arch, no chairs, no bumpin' music), and leave no trace.

National Parks? Those always need permits. Some State Parks too!

Knowing which land is which is the difference between a peaceful ceremony and a ranger rolling up mid vows, and I cannot let that happen to you, so I keep track so you don't have to!

I once had to interrupt a couple's vows because a moose was beelining straight for them!!

Picture it. Emotional moment. Tears building. And over their shoulders I watch 1,000 pounds of moose commit to a direction. THEIR direction.

So I did what any professional does: calmly paused the ceremony, relocated the couple, and watched the moose walk directly into the water where they had just been standing.

They finished their vows! The moose enjoyed the lake! Everyone left with a better story!

Well s**t. Add "wildlife wrangler" to the resume.

This is the thing about eloping out here. The mountains are not a venue, they're a coworker with boundary issues, and you want someone on your team who knows how they operate!

Getting legally married in Colorado is sooooo much easier than everyone expects!! $30, no officiant, no witnesses, just you two and a pen.

And you can pick up your marriage license at ANY county clerk in the state, it does not have to be the county you're getting married in, which means you get to pick! Grab it in whatever little mountain town you're driving through, get a coffee, make a whole morning out of it!

Both of you do have to be there in person with real IDs (no sending your partner solo on this one!) but you can get married the same day you pick it up, like actually walk in at 9am and be married by lunch if you felt like it.

Then it just goes back to that same office within 35 days. Mailing counts!

So pick your county on purpose and then go get married on a dirt road somewhere. That's genuinely the whole thing!
