We had 2 days of the most beautiful Members’ event this week @cedarridgetrails Lavender Farm- learning how to distill lavender essential oil, mold bath bombs, meeting cinnamon and opal (two 7-month old lambs) and, of course, picking gorgeous lavender! The lavender picking season is a short one, my friends, so head on over to the link in profile to pick a date to U-pick at this gorgeous family-run farm in Miamisburg, OH. You won’t regret it!

And did I mention they host yoga and painting class in the fields? 🤩

Dear Friends,
As some of you know, we put our building at 3870 N. High Street up for sale earlier this spring.

This building was a dream come true for us: a space renovated specifically for the Flowers & Bread model, tailored to house the various branches of our business, our workshops and events, our cafe, and our bread and floral production. All that, while bringing in the loveliest, most peaceful light.

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The building sold quickly. And while that means we have to make some speedy moves of our own, we can’t help but feel that this sale was meant to be.

Please join us in welcoming the new residents of 3870 N. High. We value them as eight creative and dedicated women who’ll continue traditions this space was built for: beautiful baked goods, togetherness, and joy.

@pattycakebakery is already a beloved neighborhood institution from years spent creating delicious vegan and organic baked goods for Clintonville and greater Columbus. We can’t wait to see how they make this space their own.

We’re honored to be handing them our keys on June 1st.

We’ll continue operating Flowers & Bread from the current location through May. Tricia and I’ll be in touch soon with our future plans.

With love and thanks,

Sarah & Tricia

We’ve had so many requests for our cocoa pumpernickel that we’re offering it THIS FRIDAY for bread of the week.

We also have traditional sourdough and baguettes .

Order via ~link in profile~.

Orders close *Wednesday* night.

Why cocoa pumpernickel? Because it’s the softest, tenderest dark bread around. Perfect for deli picnic sandwiches and toasted cheese sandwiches. And for a cheese and charcuterie board? 👌.

Just in time to have your fully vaccinated friends over for a mask-free drink and cheese board in the yard...spring is here, my friends. Cheers to that 🌷

🌎Earth day 🌎

How do you celebrate?

What’s moved me so much on this earth day is scrolling my feed and reading the different ways, small and big, that you’ve cared for our planet this year.

So let’s make a list! We can save it and refer back for ideas.

I’ll start 🌸
🌷We buy locally grown flowers throughout the growing season
🌷We’re actively foam-free in all our floral work
🌷We use only recycled and/or recyclable gift bags and floral paper
🌷Our amazing Village Basket audience brought their baskets back week after week for us to reuse...l got a thrill every time I saw a collection of empty baskets waiting for us on the back porch (swipe left).

So, let’s hear it! What’s one way you’ve found to be more sustainable this year?

And yes, driving less, even if due to the pandemic, definitely counts 🌷 @ The Flowers & Bread Society

Do you remember when you first discovered ranunculus? Let me know below.

It’s a question we talked about on today’s zoom workshop called Celebrate Ranunculus!

These beautiful “spring roses” have become so popular in the last decade or so, but I don’t remember much of a hullabaloo about them before then. What about you?

A few fun facts:
🌸Ranunculus means “little frog” in Latin because, just like frogs, they’d emerge each spring from the wet banks of the Tiber River.
🌸You may also know then as buttercups
🌸In the language of flowers, ranunculus signal attraction and charm. A good gift for your sweetheart!

For our workshop today, we used burgundy viola ranunculus, blush pink Hanois, faintly yellow hydra and other mixed colors of ranunculus, all from @sunnymeadowsflowerfarm. And tulips, because who can resist? 🌷🌷🌷

My plan was to pop on here and chat with you all about brioche today. Beautiful brioche, which is one of three breads we’re offering THIS FRIDAY for our bread of the week pick up.

(There’ll be sourdough boules and baguettes as well, so get your orders in before they close tomorrow. Link in profile).

But the I realized that this is our 1,000th post.

Crazy, right?

So we’ll save brioche for tomorrow.

For today? Let’s celebrate with these happy tulips🌷

These grew out back and are from the first tulip bulb collection that we offered last fall. We’ll do it again this September with even more options. The best part of spring 2021, aside from vaccines, has been seeing the photos you’ve sent in of your bulbs blooming.

So here’s to spring and here’s to you. Thanks for supporting us and sharing this space with us for 1,000 pictures 🌷🌷🌷

We love working on custom event orders!

How do you color your eggs? Let me know below🌷

This year was all speckles and toile (see below for how-to).

Last year (swipe left) was all naturally dyed eggs with turmeric, berries, cabbage and hibiscus flower.

We’re also big Paas fans here 🐣

Happy Easter to all who celebrate and happy spring Sunday to everyone 🌷

How-to decorate eggs using your favorite paper napkin print (I chose blue toile)

1. Hard boil white eggs and let cool and dry
2. Use scissors to cut out small pieces of your paper napkin, emphasizing individual flowers or small scenes.
3. You’ll only use the very top layer of each napkin.
4. Use clear glue or mod-podge to glue the top layer of each napkin scene on your egg. I place the napkin piece down and smooth the glue *over* it to seal all the edges well. You can arrange however you want and with however many pieces fit.
5. Use your finger to carefully smooth out any creases.
6. Let dry and enjoy! Even with your fingers in the clue, I think this method is the least messy of them all🌷 @ The Flowers & Bread Society

Did you know you can join our floral zoom classes using your own blooms or just to listen & learn?

This is a great way to get a feel for our workshop style.

So if you’re curious about floral design, not local to Columbus, Ohio, or just love learning new skills, you can still join us! Select the AUDIT option when registering online 🌷 Images from a floral “jewelry” workshop

Challah for BREAD OF THE WEEK!

Limited quantity for pick up this Friday.
Order at www.flowersandbread.com or link in profile.

My favorite challah memory is grabbing a softball-sized roll for my daughter whenever we’d do a big grocery shop in Los Angeles. She’d sit in the cart and gum on it happily, golden shards littering her shirt. I’d have the chance to shop in peace and maybe, if I was lucky, she’d share a fluffy bite or two. I’ll never forget the way she’d scout the bakery case to find her “wolls.”

What’s your favorite challah memory?

How can you make tulips last as long as possible?
SAVE for later (we also have this on the blog-link in profile).

🌷Rinse off any dirt (it hides in-between those leaves) and carefully peel away any loose leaves.

🌷Give your tulips a fresh cut at 45 degree angle before placing them in clean water

🌷If you want to fend off the droop as much as possible, cut your stems as directed above, then wrap the top 2/3rds of your tulips in a parchment paper or newspaper sleeve (swipe left to see) and stand them upright in a tall vase for at least a few hours or overnight. They’ll drink the cool water through straight stems, essentially shaping them from the inside out. The next morning, remove the paper, refresh your water, and your tulips will stand straighter longer.

🌷Arrange them in a tall vase to give them as much support as possible.

🌷Enjoy in a cooler spot, away from direct sunlight

🌷Recut your stems each day. Tulips are the only flowers that continue to grow in the vase. Cutting them keeps them from getting too top-heavy and floppy.

🌷Embrace the droop! The beauty of the tulip is that it looks graceful and beautiful all through its lifecycle, even as it bends and twists and droops and the petals open wide. Love them until the petals begin to fall. The Dutch masters certainly did.

🌷What’s that about a penny? Copper from a penny dropped in the water supposedly keeps tulips from drooping. I don’t know if that’s true, but a floristry student informed me that pennies are no longer made from copper! So we’ll just relegate that little bit of horticultural wisdom to the history books. Keep your pennies for another use.
