Congratulations to Sheila and her supervisor Anne at the Center for the City at the University of Cincinnati for a successful service project! In recognition of AmeriCorps week and Women's History Month, they organized a showing of the documentary film Copa 71, a film that follows the history of the 1971 Women's World Cup. They received almost $700 worth of donations of hygiene products from the 40 attendees for donation to Bethany House Services.

On Wednesday (3/11), OHSC members Emmy, Noah, and Jack recognized AmeriCorps week by serving at the Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank from 4:30p - 6:30p. In that time, they assisted in packaging 4,375 meals, or about 5,250 lbs of food.

Happy AmeriCorps Week! We're celebrating by meeting members of the Corps. Today, we meet Joe, serving at the SSU Center for Public History.

Joe says: The projects that I particularly enjoy at the moment is the refiling of the Center of Public History’s Vern Riffe Collection and the Emma Cramer dedication project that we are collaborating with the Pomeroy Foundation on. The former, I particularly enjoy because it is a glimpse into the political world of Ohio from the not too distant past all the more so with some recorded footage of the Ohio General Assembly of which Vern Riffe presided. In addition to this, in the process of repackaging these materials into their proper archival containers I have come across a flyer advertising the 1976 American Bi-Centennial which I couldn’t help but to draw comparisons to our current America250 project. As for the Emma Cramer project, it resonates with me because it covers an aspect of local history that, prior to my involvement in the project, I was simply unfamiliar with that being Emma Cramer and her role in the community. She was a teacher that had taught in Portsmouth High School as well as the first woman to be elected to Portsmouth’s City Council who had dedicated her life to the improvement the city’s schools and the education of its youth.

Happy AmeriCorps Week! We're celebrating by meeting members of the Corps. Today, we meet Emmy, serving at the Trumbull County Historical Society!

Current Project: My main project for TCHS is conducting a survey with all the historic sites and societies in Trumbull County. The questions cover a variety of topics including historic buildings, collection care, and outreach events. The purpose of the survey is to understand common experiences and see how the county historical society can better support these other historic sites.

Favorite part of serving in AmeriCorps: My favorite part of serving in AmeriCorps is that I get to meet with many people from different sites who enjoy learning about and preserving history.

“Most people know more about national occurrences than happenings in their own backyard, but local history is just as important.”

Emmy has been assisting the Trumbull County Historical Society with collections work, cataloging, and historical projects. As part of the Ohio History Service Corps, she also works with historical societies across the region, helping support local history organizations throughout Northeast Ohio.

Her work helps ensure that the stories and artifacts of Trumbull County, and communities across the region, are preserved and shared with the public.

Happy AmeriCorps Week! We're celebrating by meeting members of the Corps.
Today, we meet Noah, serving at National First Ladies' Library & Museum!

Noah says: "The project I am currently working on is adding all the different objects, artifacts, and materials that the National First Ladies Library and Museum owns to the online collection database management software known as CatalogIt. This has had me working with many different unique types of materials, from books signed by First Ladies and Presidents to the dolls custom designed for my host site which I can be seen photographing in my picture.

My favorite part of serving with AmeriCorps has been the way that it has prepared me for my career post-service. Through the work I have done at my host site and by working with other historical organizations in my region, I have gained many skills that will translate to a career in history. For example, at my service with the McKinley Presidential Library and Museum, I have been tasked with writing labels for one of their upcoming exhibits. At another host site, the Massillon Museum, I have been learning how to treat, handle, and preserve historical textiles. I am gaining practical skills and good experience through my service, and as someone who just graduated from college last year, I think it is putting me ahead of my peers.

Today, we meet Chloe! Chloe serves at the Logan County History Center.

"My favorite project is conserving objects. I have worked with paper and photographic material, textiles, and leather. All really fun! My favorite part of serving with AmeriCorps is working with the community. When they come in for research, a tour, or donation, it is always a meaningful way to connect with the community I serve."

Happy AmeriCorps Week! We're celebrating by meeting members of the Corps.

Andrew is hosted by the Newark Earthworks, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks . One of his favorite projects this year has been helping the Earthworks develop their field trip programs! The programs focus on the American Indian history of Ohio and the mounds built by the Hopewell Culture 2,000 years ago. "There is so much history in this state that goes back long before it was settled by European Americans. Getting the chance to teach that history to the next generation and watching their eyes light up at the ingenuity and genius of the Indigenous cultures that made this places what they are is very special. Being able to work with the tribal partners who still hold stake and interest in these lands and monuments of their ancestors has also been incredibly eye-opening and rewarding."
