In the summer of 2023, we heard of a dude that was playing Son Jarocho in the local parks. That dude was Diego Gonzalez. Earlier that year we started a Mexican arts and cultural organization, AlmaVision: Cultura y Mas. Perfect timing and a perfect match! I approached Diego, we quickly came to an agreement, and we started offering free Son Jarocho workshops at AVCYM.
Diego has stuck with us through it all. I remember freezing in our small space during the winter months until the staff at Ingenuity allowed us to use their heated offices. I remember hearing the beautiful sounds of jaranas and zapateados that echoed all through that empty factory every Saturday. For me, it was truly magical and emotional. For the first time in a very long time, we had something for us in our city. Our community was coming together again, and our little endeavor seemed to be working.
2 years later, we’ve gone through some changes. New location, new board members, new programs and participants and new wisdom gained from the many mistakes and learning on the job type of things. Diego has always been down since day one and stuck with us even through some crazy times.
We are sad to announce that Cleveland Son Jarocho will be ending. Newlyweds, Diego and Olivia are moving away for a great job opportunity. First, I would like to thank Diego for sharing with us his talent and passion for Son Jarocho. For those of you who were lucky enough to participate in one of his workshops can attest to the great joy and happiness one felt. Whether it was in our old space at Ingenuity, the parks, ATNSC, the performances, or our new space at The Brownhoist, that love was definitely felt. But we are also very happy! We want to wish him and Olivia safe travels, much success and lifetime full of happiness.
It’s been a wonderful partnership, Diego. You’ve been a huge part of our organization, and you’ve done so much to bring our community together. You will always have a home with us at AVCYM and you will always have friends and family here. We won’t say goodbye, we’ll just say “al rato”, see you later homie.
