As of February 15th, Rohs Street Cafe and QCPS have parted ways. For a variety of reasons, we will no longer be operating out of their space. There are not currently other options for dedicated venues, so unfortunately, our most recent open mic will indefinitely be our final one. Though this change is not an entirely happy one, I am also seeing this as an opportunity to change my own direction.
Over the last four years, I have attempted to push a show and a scene in an area that at one point lacked a dedicated and transparent poetry venue. When I arrived in Cincinnati I had not seen any poetry slam venues throughout Cincinnati or Northern Kentucky. Back in 2011, I made the decision to start a poetry slam venue in Cincinnati because at the time, I knew one did not exist. I thought I would use this as a way to give back to the city and at the same time, get to know new faces and build a community. I've helped Cincinnati send a slam team to a regional and/or national competition every year since 2012. I recently saw our first Individual World Poetry Slam representative attend the competition in October 2015, and I'm sure I will be seeing our first Women of the World Poetry Slam representative attend that competition in March 2016.
I've done this all voluntarily; never taking any portion of the cover for myself and only using it towards PSi registration, poetry slam competitions, and features. I did this not only because I am the Slam Master for QCPS, but because I hoped to expand the poetry community and give back. It's been an adventurous, yet stressful, experience, but in light of the present situation I cannot continue doing this.
With that being said, I will no longer organize Queen City Poetry Slam events. I will be cancelling the remainder of our shows this year and notifying features of our cancellations. The March 4th event in Bellevue, KY will be the last event that I help coordinate.
What I did for the community can be done by just about anyone if they have the time and energy to dedicate to it, and I am here for advice to anyone who wants to carry on the torch of a local poetry slam venue.
Thank you all for the opportunity to bless this city with something new. I hope you continue to do better for yourselves and for those around you. Maybe I'll see you around at a poetry open mic sometime soon.
All the Best,
Brian Sullivan, Jr.
