Within the historic gatehouse of Bohemian National Cemetery sits a black and white photograph of the crowd gathered for the cemetery's Memorial Day services. Bohemian had been open for fifty years, having been dedicated in 1877🌹

The cemetery will turn 150 years old next year in 2027, and one has to hope we will have the opportunity to take a similar snapshot to place on the mantel across from this one! 🎞️✨ Stop by early for the flag raising, or arrive later in the morning for refreshments and a military history tour🗝️

Before it was Memorial Day, it was Decoration Day!🗓️💐

Decoration Day was a time when Chicagoans gathered by the thousands in cemeteries across the city to honor fallen soldiers. Starting in the late 1800s, local newspapers reported on parades stretching through the streets, crowds filling cemetery grounds, and graves adorned with wreaths and flags.

Over time, public participation has shifted—but the tradition of visiting cemeteries remains a meaningful way to connect with history, community, and memory🤝

Throughout the week in the lead-up to Decoration Day Weekend, we will be sharing historic photos of celebrations through the years in Chicago cemeteries as well as letting you know how to share in similar traditions that continue at various burial grounds in the city today!🗝️✨

To kick us off, we have a selection of photographs from Graceland Cemetery's 1947 Decoration Day parade and ceremonies at the chapel.

May Day marks an annual pilgrimage for many all over the world to the Haymarket Martyr’s Monument in Forest Home Cemetery just outside of Chicago🌹

All day today, folks will be gathering at Forest Home in remembrance of those who have given their lives for the cause🪦

Join in the observance by attending a ceremony in the cemetery’s rarely-opened historic chapel, learning about labor activists resting there with a guided story walk, or leaving a rose at the Monument🖤

Chicagoans have been keeping a watchful eye on popular cherry blossom hotspots like Jackson Park, the Botanic Garden, and the Morten Arboretum, but our cemeteries are experiencing a bit of a mini-bloom right now too!🌸

While some cemeteries such as Graceland double as certified arboretums, most other historic cemeteries also feature wide varieties of flowering trees🪦🌳

As the weather becomes more consistent, strolling your local cemetery is a great way to acquaint yourself with local trees and flowers as we step into spring!💐

Sometimes we can find unexpected treasures in the cemetery, courtesy of the *living* permanent residents🦌

Deer usually shed their antlers from January into April, with the last sheds May, and those who live in Chicago's cemeteries are no different!🪦🌳

This one at Forest Home Cemetery was left on a headstone either as a token of their visit, or perhaps for someone else to find✨

The days of night patrols in Chicago cemeteries has long past, but signs of the times still remain...🪧

A ghost sign near Bohemian National Cemetery's Masaryk Memorial Mausoleum reads, "Dog Patrolled After [?] PM"

What time do you think BNC's sign says they will *let the dogs out*? 3pm? 5pm? Time has worn the paint and wood over many years so it's hard to make out!🌙🐕

Dogs may still patrol your local burial ground today - but in the daytime!☀️ Many cemeteries employ canines to patrol the grounds to rustle up the geese off of their grass🪿 Maybe we're in the wrong line of business!💀
