Field & Florist

Field & Florist Flower farm and floral design studio with two retail locations — F&F Division Street (Wicker Park) and F&F Monadnock (Downtown Chicago).

From early spring through late fall, we harvest from our farm in Sawyer, MI producing the freshest blooms grown without pesticides and harmful chemicals. When we are not in the field, we can be found in one of our two retail shops, meeting with clients and working to create beautiful events. F&F Division Street (Wicker Park) carries flowers and an edited selection of home goods, gifts, bath & body

products, garden tools and more. F&F Monadnock (Downtown Chicago) carries flowers and an extensive selection of niche fragrances from around the world. Our offerings include Baruti, Comme des Garçons, Di Ser, Eris Parfums, Folie À Plusieurs, Fray Ardens, Fzotic, Kitowa, Marlou, Masque Milano, Maya Njie, Neandertal, Parallax Olfactory, Régime des Fleurs, Serge Lutens and more. Good morning! The Fall Dahlia Share is now live on our site.

Some details:

Dahlia growing is at the heart of Field & Florist. For four consecutive weeks during late summer and early fall, shareholders will receive a dozen freshly harvested F&F dahlias delivered each Wednesday in Chicago (and Extended Delivery Range) and each Thursday in SW Michigan. We will keep track of what variety you receive each week to ensure four weeks of different blooms.

Field & Florist started by offering Chicago’s first flower share program a decade ago in 2012. Inspired by the CSA model, the flower share allows farmers like us to depend on stable sales, knowing that there won’t be any crop loss with harvest, while providing shareholders with a reduced cost of product per stem and either pick up at either shop (free) or discounted delivery at $30 total for all four weeks.

Peak dahlia season in our growing zone is September through mid-October. As with our Spring Ranunculus Share, we will begin weekly deliveries on a first come, first served basis. Example: if you are the first to join the share, you will receive flowers as soon as the first stems are ready for harvest. Depending on the weather and other conditions of the growing season, that could mean as early as the last week of August. Other shareholders will be notified in the order they joined that their weekly deliveries are beginning as blooms become available for harvest.

If it sells out, add your email to the list at the bottom of the product page to be the first to know if/when we’re able to open more shares.

We opened the doors of F&F Division 5 years ago today. It has been a beautiful, meaningful and extremely difficult time to be a small business which is why we want to spend our birthday highlighting Black Florist Fund, a new initiative launching today. If F&F has enriched your life in any ways (big or small) please consider donating via the link in our bio. Let’s get this fund booming! More info:

is an endeavor embarked upon in partnership with AEO and a team of Black entrepreneur advisors. Through donations and sponsorships, Black Florist Fund (BFF) aims to provide worry-free capital grants and other crucial business resources to Black florists. These grants will be awarded to applicants who demonstrate a passion for the floral business community and a need for additional funding to help reach their goals and propel their business. BFF hopes to provide valuable support to help stabilize and grow a number of black owned floral businesses each year.

Join us in supporting Black florists and flower farmers through BFF and by donating through the link in the bio!

One of the most exciting things about moving to our permanent farm has been the chance to start putting long-term systems into practice. It’s a slow process involving a lot of experimentation. Nothing is ideal. We sometimes dream of a lottery ticket windfall, but since we operate independently, every decision has to be thought of in relation to cost and our labor.

We continue to grow our flowers without chemicals, but for those of you that are interested, here are a couple current practices and new experiments going on at the F&F Farm.

1. Between our two shops, each year we save approx 5.2 tons of floral waste from the landfill by bringing it back to our farm to compost. Right now our composting process is passive (slow) because we don’t have a tractor to turn it. As we amass more, we’re researching next steps and techniques to provide better aeration, carbon and nitrogen to our pile so that that it breaks down faster, hotter, and with a well-balanced carbon to nitrogen ratio. The eventual goal is to use the nutrient rich compost to top off our beds.

2. We’re doing some trials in our new peony section (pictured) using a w**d suppression method involving double layering used cardboard around the plants. Each row is then covered with wood chips. It’s a labor-intensive undertaking at this scale (one row took 3 people 2 days and we were grinding). It has also been a rewarding process because we’re breaking down boxes used to ship flowers to the floral wholesalers in Chicago and putting them to work on the farm.

3. The ultimate goal at F&F is to grow more flowers to provide Chicago with beautiful blooms that haven’t traveled thousands of miles, leaving an astronomical CO2 footprint. It’s hard not to be able to do it all right away, but little by little, each year we’re working to close our seasonal production gaps.

We can’t recycle or consume our way out of the climate crisis. With just 100 companies producing 71% of global emissions, the truth is that we needed massive legislative intervention a long time ago. But that also doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t do what we can where we can. So much further to go.

We came back from the farm at around midnight with the first harvest of marigolds and godetia. They’re available at Division today. $15 / short stem bunches.

Between w**ding, harvesting and sowing trays for fall crops, it’s been a busy few weeks. The little bananas in the third picture are the coated seeds of a new variety of marigold that we’re sowing now. If the weather permits, we’re hoping that they’ll bloom right around Dia de los Mu***os.

07/02/2022

Come see us today at Division until 5 PM. Both shops will be closed Sunday & Monday. Have a great weekend.

Anyone that has spent time at F&F knows our enduring love for Régime des Fleurs. At one point, we turned our floral cooler into an exhibition called Archive which featured RdF’s extensive body of work in fragrance and collaborations with artists, filmmakers, musicians, actresses, bakers and sculptors. Our admiration for the ‘reign of flowers’ only grows. F&F Monadnock is now stocked with the new collection of fragrances from Régime and writer/fashion editor . Perfumers include Donna Ramanauskas, Mathieu Nardin and Dominique Ropion. We invite you to stop by Monadnock to experience them in person.

Fan favorites Falling Trees, Little Flower & Glass Blooms are back in stock as well.

Excited to welcome Scottish perfumers Jorum Studio to F&F Monadnock. We first got in touch with Chloe and Euan after experiencing their incredible work for Neandertal and have been equally blown away by their prolific output under their own name. The shop has 14 new fragrances from the house in three different collections: Progressive Botany, Selective Memory and Scottish Odyssey (new in 2022). All are blended by hand.

In many ways, Jorum represents (to us) the definition of niche fragrance & what makes it so exciting. Their point of view is so specifically tied to place while also interpreting the environment, memory and fantasy through scent in evocative new ways. We aren’t surprised at all that their name has been popping up all over the olfactory universe. Consider this an open invitation to come smell them with us!
