My name is Carrie Rivera, I am a Wedding Officiant/Minister and Owner of "Chicago Justice of the Peace Weddings" aka "Chicago JOP". I also work as a Notary Public and Freelance Paralegal with Chicago Paralegal Notary Services.

I'd like to clarify, especially for couples who may be seeking this type of person to wed them, that Illinois no longer has justices of the peace in any office. Please read our disclaimer for further information.

Q & A about Chicago JOP....

Why do you use the term/phrase "justice of the peace" in your company name?

Since 2008, the above phrase was incorporated into my company name, strictly for wedding officiant advertising purposes. I am not and have never claimed to be an actual justice of the peace or a judge nor have I worked for any local, city or state governmental office in this title or capacity. What is it that you do exactly?

I am an ordained, non-denominational minister, who can legally marry any couple seeking be wed in the State of Illinois in any county therein, provided the couple has obtained the appropriate county marriage certificate. Couples must obtain a marriage certificate for the county they seek to be married in. Click for more information on how to obtain a Cook County IL Marriage License.

Why this job?

I fell into this particular profession when a relative, who was also an ordained pastor, asked me to fill in and interpret his wedding ceremony from English to Spanish as the scheduled interpreter did not show up. I admired and loved sharing this event with the couple so much, and after many encouraging compliments, got ordained and have been marrying couples ever since.

Do you marry same-sex couples?

Yes I do. I strongly believe that no one should ever be denied, what is a basic human right, to be legally wed to one's true love....for as long as they both shall live. Finding one's soul mate is truly a blessing, and wanting to share the vows of matrimony with one another, should never be denied to anyone. I am GLBTQ friendly, and have proudly married many same-sex couples, some of which have been among my favorite wedding ceremonies. I am proud to have a daughter in this community, and will continue to serve those who are ready to tie the knot.
