A photo session is never just about the camera.

The location, the available light, the mood, and the intention behind the image all play a role in how I approach it.

For this setup, I used three flashes, not because more lights automatically make a better photograph, but because they allowed me to shape the light exactly where I wanted it.

Sometimes I’ll use natural light. Sometimes one flash is enough. Other times, I’ll build the entire lighting setup.

There’s no single formula.

The goal is to look at the space, understand what the image needs, and decide what tools will help bring that idea to life.

Need help finding the right “Save the Date” concept?

That’s often where the process begins.

Before thinking about locations, poses, or Pinterest ideas, I like to have a conversation with my clients. I want to know what they like, the colors of the celebration, the style of the dress, and the feeling they want their images to have.

For this session, one of the things she mentioned was that she liked bubbles.

That small detail became the starting point.

I found the Shimmering Summer installation at the Chicago Botanic Garden, with its oversized colorful bubbles, and suddenly the idea started to make sense. The colors worked with her dress, the setting gave us something unique to work with, and from there we built the session around it.

That’s how I like to approach Save the Date sessions.

You don’t have to arrive with the perfect idea. Sometimes, you just need to tell me what you like … and we’ll find the concept together. ✨
