“FirstLight showed me new and good things, as well as young and enthusiastic filmmakers,” shared Vuthipong Sukhanindr. A Thai film director having made waves on Netflix with “The Stone” (2025), Sukhanindr graciously spent an eventful evening with us as a guest speaker at our FirstLight screening in House Lagom on May 28th. It was a wonderful session brimming with inspiration and creativity ✨

Stepping into the homely, candlelit screening room, audiences were treated to May’s edition of FirstLight, which featured 6 Thai independent short films curated by ME GOODY. Melancholic pieces gave way to heartwrenching drama, as the evening’s film selection left viewers entranced from start to finish. Each of the movies was met with a round of applause, with our audience taking in a lovely experience quite unlike anything else in the local cinema scene.

Following our FirstLight showcase, Sukhanindr was invited up to host a Film Talk. From storyboards sketched on handheld whiteboards to the complete theatrical cut, Sukhanindr took us through the collaborative filmmaking journey on “The Stone,” step-by-step. It was fascinating to hear about his creative escapades and insights, as well as his thoughts on where the independent film scene in Thailand is headed. The talk left a noticeable impression on filmmakers and scriptwriters in the audience, who openly shared their questions and creative aspirations as the event drew to a close. Plenty of folks stuck around to chat with other viewers about the films, and maybe make some new likeminded friends along the way!

Nueng, an Isaan voice actor, meets Anne when she expresses interest in renting his old house in Khon Kaen, Thailand. He sees this as an opportunity to finally confess the feelings he has kept hidden for 15 years, ever since they worked together on a short film in the countryside of Khon Kaen in 2007.

" Land of Smile " is a quiet, heartbreaking film about how war destroys lives long before it ever reaches the actual battlefield. It follows a small farming family whose lives are filled with simple worries: growing rice, hard work, and just getting through the day. But everything changes when the son finds out his friends were killed in a bombing at a 7-Eleven. Crushed by grief and feeling totally helpless, he decides to join the army, hoping it will give some meaning to the deep pain he is feeling.

What makes “ Land of Smile ” so emotionally powerful is how deeply human it feels. A father terrified of losing the only family he has left, and a son desperately trying to heal from a loss he cannot escape. Their conflict is not built on hatred, but on love expressed in different ways. This film gently reminds us that war is never suffered by soldiers alone - it also lives inside the homes, memories, and hearts of ordinary people forced to carry consequences they never created themselves.

Last week’s FirstLight Film Screening event at House Lagom had such a warm and lovely energy ✨🎬

People from different backgrounds came together for an evening of watching 6 independent films by 6 aspiring Thai filmmakers. I remember looking around the room while the films were playing and quietly thinking about how special it felt to see strangers sitting together, reacting to the same stories in completely different ways.

One of the highlights of the night was our Film Talk session with Vuthipong Sukhanindr, director of The Stone (2025). It was really meaningful to hear an industry filmmaker openly share his production journey and perspectives, while also creating a space for discussion between commercial feature filmmakers and independent filmmakers about what the future of indie film in Thailand could look like.

After the screenings ended, many people stayed behind just to continue talking — about the films, the emotions they carried, and the thoughts they were taking home with them. Some also left with new connections and friendships formed through a shared love for film.

One thing that stayed with me most was hearing someone say that events like this are hard to find these days. A space where you can slow down, watch films together, exchange perspectives, and leave feeling like you experienced something meaningful beyond just “watching a movie.”

Moments like this remind me why we started FirstLight in the first place 💛

หลังหนังจบ หลายคนก็ยังอยู่ต่อเพื่อคุยกันต่อ ทั้งเรื่องหนัง ความรู้สึกที่ได้จากหนัง หรือสิ่งที่แต่ละคนกำลังคิดอยู่ บางคนก็ได้รู้จักเพื่อนใหม่จากความชอบหนังเหมือนกันแบบไม่รู้ตัว

มีประโยคหนึ่งที่ยังติดอยู่ในใจเรามาก มีคนบอกว่า “เดี๋ยวนี้หากิจกรรมแบบนี้ยากนะ” พื้นที่ที่เราจะได้ค่อย ๆ ช้าลง ดูหนังด้วยกัน แลกเปลี่ยนมุมมอง และกลับบ้านไปพร้อมความรู้สึกบางอย่าง มากกว่าการแค่ “ดูหนังจบแล้วกลับ”

ช่วงเวลาแบบนี้แหละที่ทำให้เรานึกขึ้นมาอีกครั้งว่า ทำไมเราถึงเริ่ม FirstLight ตั้งแต่แรก 💛

"Twilight Without Ghosts" (2024) is far from your typical nature documentary. It examines Thai folklore surrounding the “Phee-Tak-Pah-Aom,” or “Nappy Ghosts:” spirits that emerge in twilight to hang their childrens’ clothes. In reality, these “ghosts” are really sheetweb spiders, who in the night spin webs that resemble clothing. But rather than dismissing these tales as childish superstition, "Twilight" instead shows how these ghost stories were actually relevant and pragmatic to our ancestors. Because the tribespeople revered these ghostly spiders, both species could peacefully co-exist. However, the rapid urbanization of modern society has threatened the fragile balance in our environment. Not only are we eroding the world around us, but we are also losing sight of our stories – the beauty in our cultural myths, and the stories passed down from generation to generation. "Twilight" observes the passage of time, and the magic we humans have lost in the process. Director Panitarn Boontarig brings a timely sense of urgency to the screen. He showcases fascinating interviews with people, as well as gorgeous footage of the elusive sheetweb spiders. As beautiful as it is compelling, "Twilight" is a somber reflection of what we have lost – the ghosts we can no longer see.
