This was a magical day. This community of women from Stone Soup Gathering is one I will always be grateful to be a part of.

They put a blanket down, there’s room for you to sit. They have an empty hand, your baby can fill it.

The beauty of motherhood shines in each of these women and it’s inspiring!

Those last few weeks of your pregnancy seem to pass minute by minute. But I think time moves slowly so that you have the before just a tad longer.

More morning pancakes with your first baby. Evenings playing outside. Bath times and snuggles before bed. The after feels like it might be bittersweet. You imagine there will be days looking back when it was ‘just us.’ When you gave all your energy to one baby instead of two. When life wasn’t as chaotic and loud, with double the mess.

But then you’ll look at your children as they run, play, and laugh beside one another. It will feel as if life itself didn’t exist before you knew them.

And it will only be sweet.

Being invited into these sacred spaces is not lost on me.

I remember how exhausting, overwhelming, messy, and new everything was as a first time mom. No breaks. Learning as each day starts again.

That’s why capturing these seasons is so important. When the haze of postpartum lifts (and it will) you’ll see just how incredible it all was.

You’ve carried a child inside your body. Inside your heart. You start with the car seat and diaper bag. Then onto the collected flowers they’ve picked. From flowers to book bags. No matter how heavy it gets, us mamas, can carry it all. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.

These small, quiet moments deserve to be documented just as much as the big, loud ones. A cozy evening with take out, a good book, your favorite pup, and your best friend.

How many photographs of our parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents do we see just like this one? An uncle listening to a vinyl he just bought. Your grandma with her famous pie in her kitchen. Your aunt with her new car. Your grandpa playing guitar on the couch.

I’ve never thought, ‘oh wow, they’re not doing anything.’ I have heard people say, ‘that’s my brother Mark, I wish you could have met him,’ and, ‘I would love to visit that house just one more time.’

It’s never important how they did their hair that day, what they were wearing, or everyone being perfectly still and posed. It’s significant because of who they are and the memories that time holds.

This is what photography is meant to do. Capture these real life things that will continue to be seen for generations and generations and generations.

How do you explain to your grown up babies that you’ll always remember them like this? Sticky hands, dirty feet. Little arms wrapped around your legs.

When making cookies with your mom and dad was a weekly highlight. Learning how to climb the ladder with your big sister a canon event. The pups that grew old as your family added another little one.

This everyday magic, that felt like a normal Tuesday, is what will replay in your memory over and over.

A puzzle piece of your life that you can treasure and one day show them. So when they are grown, they’ll remember what it felt like to be your baby.
