Bringing the experience of clay and pottery into the creative world of preschool aged children is an adventure. Are there times when we work together to re-roll a slab or an extra scratch and attach is needed, or the clay get’s pinched to smithereens? Absolutely. But do we also get to crawl like spiders and do a spidey-dance? You bet. If your kid is CLT local, ages 3.5-5.5 and bathroom independent - we’d love to have you join us for our drop-off weekly art+clay class on Tuesday 9-10:30 or Thursday 1:30-3.

Thank you to Festival In The Park and all the families that joined us last weekend. We absolutely adore community art-making and each person that contributed to this installation and worked on a keychain pull or bookmark to take home. We love that you left a little creativity behind and took a little back home with you too! Occasionally businesses and people in ask, “You wouldn’t be able to use these 5000 leftover ID badge clips, or the sauce lids we accidentally ordered in the wrong size, or these old hotel keys, could you?!?” They always assume it’s going to be a no while we are over here saying “Ooo treasures… what should we make?” So here’s our question: what random material do you have lying around that can’t be used or recycled? And how much of it is there? Could it be a project for 1 maker, 40, or 3000?

We get so excited to get our hands in clay! It’s a feeling like no other, there is no right or wrong, and we are deeply connected to this medium that comes straight from the earth. We shape, mold, build, fire, and glaze. An age-old process that is completely offline and builds skills that connect us to millennia of human history.

Opening the kiln is both exciting and terrifying and our eyes are falling out over these EPIC “Not a Needoh” builds from our workshop last week! Eek! The kids learned how to marble their stained clay, to tamp down sides of a pinch pot to make their cube - AND had time to make a pocket-sized “no-longer-squishy” fidget friend! P.S We just added another workshop on Oct. 9 if you didn’t grab a spot in the first one!

When a younger student walks in saying they know how to “do pottery” - what they usually mean is that they’ve gone to a paint your own pottery spot to decorate the surface design of a factory made bisque piece. That’s well and good and we are here for creativity in all it’s forms. BUT to access the next level feels - you have to see the wide eyes and huge cheeks as a four year old explains to their grown-up how they took a lump of clay from the ground, used their big muscles to roll out a slab, made clay glue while they scored and slipped and transformed that ball of clay into a leaf and caterpillar sculpture. Don’t worry, it needs to be “cooked” and when they get it back their dusty glaze will be bright and shiny! As always, shout out to The World Of Eric Carle for always inspiring generations of makers!

Weekly creativity starts today! We are back into the swing of weekly art and pottery classes for children 18mos through adults. Choose between mixed media or pottery, or take one of our combo art + clay classes for a great mix of both! Our weekly classes foster creativity and community while exploring fine art skills through inspiring projects. Located conveniently in the Waverly shopping center in South Charlotte, our bright and colorful studio is a welcoming place for all.

School is back! And Ms. Katie has been collecting all the magic paint brushes filled with all the colors you can dream of. Classes start as young as 18mos (with caregiver) through adults. Check out our weekly class offerings in both the art and pottery studio and experience the magic for yourself.

Anyone have bored kids at home right now? 🫣

Try giving them a drawing prompt that’s so BIG... the sky’s the limit!

Instead of saying, “Draw a boat,” amp it up and get those creative wheels turning:

“You get to design the world’s most incredible HOUSEBOAT. Your whole family gets to live on it. Your friends can parachute in by helicopter for play dates.

It has EVERYTHING you could ever want or need! And remember... when you live on a houseboat, you can’t just run to the store... so what’s it going to have?”

A treehouse? A waterslide? A pet dragon? A movie theater? A donut shop? A shark-proof submarine?

Watch what happens.  No limits = exploding imaginations!

It’s probably not something they’d think to draw on their own, and you’ll probably get a few eye rolls, but once they’re no longer trying to draw the “right” or “perfect” thing they’re off to the races!

And then if you want to keep it going - ask them where their houseboat is headed and have them write the story of the journey or draw the next stop on their adventure. Or dump out the kitchen junk drawer and go make the 3D version!

Sometimes all it takes is one great prompt to unlock a secret world of crazy ideas!

Who’s feeling an SHBA Summer Project Series? 👋

Over the past 17 years, we’ve curated thousands of art and ceramic projects with thousands of young artists.

Some have been messy.

Some have been magical.

Some have completely surprised us.

And many have become all-time favorites.

This summer, we’re opening up the SHBA vault and sharing some of our favorite camp projects, complete with inspiration, tips, and tutorials so you can create along with us at home, in your studio, classroom, or wherever creativity finds you. We’re thinking of our “tried and true”, “no fail” faves that will make your eyeballs fall out!
