Coleus-a beautiful addition to your shade/part sun garden! They are a striking addition to your garden as the “”filler” and a needed contrast to your flowering plants.

Coleus will bloom, but many gardeners plant much off the blooms so the plant can focus its energy on its foliage. In fact, if left to bloom, and the blooms die back, that will cause the whole plant to die back!

Can’t you just picture this beautiful foliage in a pot near your front door with a Thunbergia thriller, coleus filler and perhaps a trailing petunia spiller?!!!

Butterfly’s and hummingbirds are loving our new Garden Center…and they will love your garden too!!! Look for tubular flowers, and nectar heavy flowers! Pollinators will love them as well.

Deadheading is one of my favorite “chores” in the garden!!! Removing spent blooms allows a plant to redirect energy from seed bearing to producing more bloom’s.

The first step to effective deadheading is a great, sharp, pair of pruners. My favorite brand is Fiskars. They are sharp enough to cleanly cut through the stem. Less quality pruners will tend to mash the stem end, rather than cleanly slice through it, opening it up to disease and not encouraging more blooms.

When deadheading, cut through the stem at an angle, right above the first set of healthy leaves.

Lobelias, salvias and fushcias prefer to not be deadheaded if you are looking for them to self seed!

Snapdragons
Zinnias
Geranium
Foxglove
Daisies
Dahlias
Cosmos
Petunias
Cana Lilies

So wander your flowers in the early morning or evening, grab a pair of Fiskars at Oceanside ACE Hardware, and enjoy deadheading for healthy plants and flowers all summer long!!!

We have hanging pots that will bloom all summer!!!! With their clip on or off hanger, they are versatile enough to set on top of a patio table or upside down pot in the garden for a little different elevation!

ACE is the place for these beautiful fuchsia and geranium hanging beauties! ACE Garden Center, that is 😀

When planting pots - consider what you will plant as your Thriller, filler and spiller!!! Our Thunbergia make a great thriller as it rises and blooms continually, with little care!!! Just make sure your pot is large enough!

Fill the bottom with rock for drainage, use a great potting soil, and use more plants than you think you will need for a full look!

Then…enjoy all summer!!! The hummingbirds will love Thunbergia too 😀

I have such great memories of family pumpkin growing contests! The results were always hilarious, bonded us together, and was simply great fun. So get your family, neighborhood, or friends together for the great pumpkin contest!!!! We have some fun pumpkin plants, so come on down to Oceanside ACE Hardware while they are still here. As the grand winners one year of our family contest with a 100 pounder - we do have some secrets I can’t broadcast over the air, but would be happy to share in person! 😉
