Lyonnaise are virtually unknown outside of their native France, and they are so rare that even in the erudite Aviculture Europe this fascinating chicken is listed under “Unknown Breeds.” Lyonnaise were created by Monsieur Etienne Tamburini of Lyon, France, in the 1950s, and it was almost two decades before this mid-sized large fowl was formally recognized as a breed. Check out this handsome Brabanter rooster.
The Brabanter is a very old Dutch breed that became extinct around 1900 and was re-created again in 1920. This "new" Brabanter is not as large as the original seems to have been, but it surely is a most attractive fowl, with its narrow, flattened crest, its three cornered beard and its peculiar comb with the two v-shaped horns.

The saying is, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
It’s in that spirit that the Chicken Festival wants to go beyond donating to local food banks.
With the help many volunteers, the Festival is establishing a year-round initiative called “Plant the Seed” to inspire, facilitate and promote the creation of home, school and community gardens across Hernando County.
