Mia was a super mom although she got out last week and wondered into our neighbor’s property. After raising 11 puppies she was ready to get out and look around. Congratulations to all of the families who will raise these puppies. Please comment and post the best pictures of your new family members! In the 4th week of a Great Pyrenees puppy’s life (transitional stage), key developments include:
• Eyes fully open and vision improving.
• Hearing fully developed; puppies respond to sounds.
• Begin walking steadily (no longer just crawling).
• Start teething; baby teeth emerge, leading to chewing.
• Weaning begins: transition to soft solid puppy food (mother reduces nursing).
• More active play with littermates; social skills and coordination improve.
• Barking and tail wagging start.
• Rapid physical growth; Great Pyrenees puppies typically weigh ~5-10 lb around 1 month (week 4 marks the end of neonatal phase).
This is a high-energy, exploratory phase

Enjoying the cold weather with family. Winter is a great time to be on the farm. Home cooked meals, warm fires, a little reading, and checking on the lamb and puppies. We are in the middle of lambing, the puppies are 3 weeks old, it’s quiet and beautiful.

Mia and PJ had their first litter of 11 beautifully puppies on Sat. January 3rd. 8 girls 3 boys. Despite being first time mom, Mia learned from her older sister Mimi last year and is feeding the puppies well and we have increased her nutrients to ensure she has enough milk for all 11. Developmental Milestones in Week Two
Physical Growth
Weight Gain: Great Pyrenees puppies typically gain about 5-10% of their body weight daily.
Eyes and Ears: Puppies begin to open their eyes and ears, usually around 10-14 days after birth.
Sensory Development
Vision: Initially, their vision is blurry, but they start to perceive light and movement.
Hearing: They begin to respond to sounds, which is crucial for their social development.
Mobility
Movement: Puppies start to crawl and may begin to stand briefly. Their coordination improves as they practice moving around.
Social Interaction
Cuddling: They rely on their mother for warmth and comfort, often cuddling with littermates.
Communication: Vocalizations increase, including soft whines and barks, as they start to express their needs.
Health and Care
Nursing: They continue to nurse frequently, which is essential for their growth and immune system development.
Monitoring: We monitor their health, ensuring they are gaining weight and staying active.
During this week, the foundation for their future behavior and health is established, making it a critical period in their early development. Although the puppies in this litter already have homes, there can be circumstances which allow a puppy to become available by the time they are ready for their new home. Mia and PJ had their first litter yesterday. Mia has been nursing pretty well in the den with 2 warming lights. PJ is now 160 lbs at 2 years and still growing so we expect his puppies to be large livestock guardians. Mia had 10 puppies, 6 girls and 4 boys. All puppies already have good homes waiting for them when they are ready to leave their mom in late February. Some will become livestock guardians like their parents and some will become family pets.

We are fostering a 1 year old male Boxer/Pitt mix and trying to find a forever home for this wonderful dog. He is the most cuddly dog we have ever met. In the evenings he just wants to crawl up on your lap and fall asleep. He doesn’t bark or show ANY signs of aggression towards other dogs or people. He loves to chase squirrels though! Perfect size dog, not to big not to small. A true snuggle bug. DM us if you are interested.

After 12 years and 1 month Finn passed away. He was a great dog, a mix of some sort, we think a Labrador and border collie, he was a rescue. He was patient, easy going, and a constant presence in our lives. Crowds were not his thing and he was scared of loud noises from motorcycles or cars and trucks with retrofitted mufflers that do nothing but disturb the peace. He could do almost anything you asked as long as you had food in your hand. Every morning and evening he expected walks so he could relieve himself. He would never use the bathroom in our yard. Just last month he attended parents weekend at our son’s university with us. At the post game tailgate, Finn walked gently around the party with parents and students, glad to be there with the rest of the family, receiving hugs from all, never leaving the unfenced yard. Less than 4 weeks later his ankle began to swell so we took him to the vet and found out he had advanced lung cancer. We err told he had 6 months but for the next 6 days he was having more and more trouble breathing. The last few days, he could not stand, eat, or drink, so last night we put him to sleep.
