“THE BEST OF THE WORST”

OPENING: Friday December 20th 2019 (6-10 pm)
2 man art show featuring the work of Dave Meall and RC Hagans

Lifelong friends Dave Meall and RC Hagans have teamed up to bring you a multidisciplinary art experience that is sure to leave a mark. Paintings, photographs, functional home-defense sculptures, these works blur the line between sacred and profane. Our heroes’ outer appearance may be that of a black hat, but inside of each lies a heart of gold. Hedonistic-missionaries, artisan-vandals, destructive-creators. These contradictions enforce the punk-rock ethos of an uncompromising internal code of ethics with little care for societies norms or the laws of man. The work itself invites the viewer into a world where elegance is found in the most peculiar of places and asks questions about the nature of truth and beauty. If you haven’t heard of these 2 yet, you will soon. They have each collaborated with some of our greatest living artists and for the first time under one roof their personal work will be on display to the public. The show will be hosted by Atlanta’s Blue Mark Galley and opens Friday, December 20 at 6pm. In partnership with Bad Kids Club (an underground movement of martial-artist, skaters, graffiti-writers, and misfits) this is not an event you want to miss.

Join the Blue Mark Gallery and artists Emily Braswell and Jenna Rees for a discussion about our current show "DAYTONA" . This body of work is an abstracted narrative of an impromptu road trip with a destination determined by digital chance (asking Siri, “heads or tails?”).. It’s your last chance to see this intriguing collection of paintings, photographs, sculpture and mixed media. Guest curator Joe Dreher . Images by Terry Kearns

Our next exhibit, DAYTONA, features new works by Atlanta based artists Emily Braswell and Jenna Rees. 7/13/18 (7-10PM)

This exhibit is presented and curated by Joe Dreher (aka JoeKingATL).

The Real Milk Studios is a collaboration between two Atlanta based artists, Emily Braswell and Jenna Rees, under the art aliases of strawberriemilk_ and warmmilkwithsugar. The shared brand acts as a platform for all of their creative collaborations. It is also the informal title of their common studio space in the Historic Fourth Ward neighborhood.

Braswell and Rees have been a duo since 2010 when they met at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). It was there that they began their artistic dialogue. Rees then received a BFA degree from Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), while Braswell attended University of North Carolina Charlotte (UNCC) obtaining a BA. After pursuing their work independently, Rees in New York and Braswell in Charlotte, the duo felt compelled to reconnect and focus on pursuing their art and collaborative endeavors in Atlanta.

Join us for the closing party of "Unraveled" Friday, June 29th from 7-10pm

We hope you have visited the gallery exhibit featuring 4 very talented artists and invite you to join us for the closing this week. We have introduced you to 3 of the 4 artists already, and certainly can't go without sharing about Igor Korsunskiy

Artist Statement: I began working mostly in oil on canvas in a representational manner, influenced heavily by Surrealism. After strong criticism of my work, I immediately started to expand my palette of materials and started working in many different mediums. While practicing in multiple mediums I also discovered my appreciation for “meaningful coincidences”. This relationship is especially important in the process of my found object work, although it finds its way into most all of my work as I take somewhat of a “holistic” approach. It might take a couple of months or a few years to complete a piece, but the inception of most ideas start when I find the initial object. Typically I will sketch the idea immediately when it comes, conserving the pure, immediate expression of that vision and composition. The rest of the process is simply waiting for the other objects to manifest themselves. Most found object pieces are like souls crying to be discovered. They want to be heard, to be explained. It's like the idea finds its body. Working without attachment to a specific medium allows me to think and work in installation and design immersive experiences.

Much of my inspiration I draw from a duality I find in nature: beauty evident within the imperfect, perfection within the inherently flawed. It is a motif I also find to be constantly perpetuated in society, born from a fusion between the creative forces of nature and ancient art. His website can be found at: www.kesha-art.com

Join us for the closing party of "Unraveled" next Friday, June 29th from 7-10pm

Andrew Catanese has been one of the remarkable artists we have had the pleasure of hosting during the "Unraveled" gallery exhibit. We want to be sure that everyone has the opportunity to see his works, which have been featured in so many galleries!

Andrew Catanese attended the Sam Fox School of Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis where he obtained a BFA in Studio Art. He currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia from his studio at the Goat Farm Arts Center where he is an artist-in-residence with The Creatives Project. He shows regularly with Kai Lin Art in Atlanta. He has also shown in galleries and museums in New York, NY; St. Louis, MO; Bethlehem, PA; Florence, Italy; Richmond, Va; and throughout Georgia. His work stems from growing up in the South as a queer, secular man. The dense, tapestry-like images are populated with figures in disguise caught in moments of violence and intimacy, surrounded by the thick, heavy foliage of the South. His paintings draw heavily from literature, biblical narratives, and classical myth, but also use landscape as ways to discuss how we form the image of our self. His website can be found at: www.andrewcatanese.com

Hi all. Atlanta Varsity Showdown has added a blues room to the Friday and Saturday late nights.

The blues room will be focused on jazz blues, appropriate for Ballroomin' Blues dances such as Savoy Walk, Slow Drag, Strut and Stride that are rooted in swing era jazz music. Don't know those particular blues dances? The dances come out of the music, so just listen closely to the music and to your partner, and you will have a great time.

In this year's blues room, AVS attendees will hear other sections of the song catalogs from artists such as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Sidney Bechet and similar that they never encounter while dancing Lindy Hop, Charleston or Balboa.

Let Louis make you swing out hard in the main room, and then come downstairs and find out just how much emotion he can really get out of his trumpet.

Besides big band blues, New Orleans jazz blues and Vaudeville/T.O.B.A. jazz blues will also be represented.

DJs: Benjy Thomas & Emily Elizabeth

Time: 11pm - 2:30am, Friday & Saturday, Oct 27 & 28
Location: Blue Mark Studios
892 Jefferson St NW, Atlanta, GA 30318
Floor: stained concrete / painted concrete

Cost:

- Included as part of AVS full workshop or dance passes.

- $20 a la carte pricing for each AVS late night
(access to one night's blues room and main AVS activities from 11pm - 2:30am).

- $35 a la carte pricing for each AVS full night of dancing
