Cleo Hearn didn’t just ride, he made history. As one of the first Black professional rodeo cowboys, he shattered barriers in the 1960s, competing in an industry that tried to shut out Black talent. Not only did he dominate in calf roping, but he also went on to create the Cowboys of Color Rodeo, making sure the next generation knew that Black cowboys have always been here.

Before Beyoncé gave her flowers on Cowboy Carter, Linda Martell was already a trailblazer. As the first commercially successful Black female country artist, she broke barriers in the 1970s with her hit Color Him Father and became the first Black woman to perform at the Grand Ole Opry. But like so many Black pioneers in country music, her legacy was nearly erased…..until now.
