The Otomí are one of Mexico's oldest indigenous peoples, with a history in central Mexico that predates the Aztec empire. Their embroidery tradition, known in Spanish as "deshilado" or "bordado otomí," has existed in some form for centuries, though the specific style most recognizable today — bold figures in saturated color on white fabric — was significantly developed and spread in the twentieth century through cooperatives that connected artisan communities with commercial markets.
