Heather Tolley-Bauer is a 50-year-old, wife-mom-comedian-cancer-survivor-straight-shooting-cracker-upper-of-audiences-and-encourager-of-women who believes there is power in hyphens. Obviously. That’s why she started the stand-up comedy production company, Hyphen Up.
Heather started her comedy career five years ago after she and her family moved to the Atlanta area from Connecticut.
“I had been a corporate public relations executive and an entrepreneur before (and after) I had my son. Then we were relocated to Georgia and I didn’t know what I would do”, said Tolley-Bauer. “I was in a new state, my son was headed off to Kindergarten and my husband’s new job required a lot of travel. For the first time in my life I was a stay-at-home mom and I was a little pi**ed off about it. I always felt very fortunate to be able to stay home but, like a lot of women, I wasn’t always fulfilled by it.”
So at (almost) 45 years-old, Heather took a stand-up comedy class and soon found her voice. “I’d go to these open mics, surrounded by young comics performing in front of younger audiences and someone would always say to me, ‘You’re so funny. You remind me of my mom’. I learned it didn’t matter that I was doing mostly ‘mom-com’ because everyone has a mother,” Tolley-Bauer said.
