I hear people say quite frequently that the down side to using grow bags is that they dry out too fast. It doesn't have to be that way! My husband saw these at a local nursery and stole the idea from them for our dahlias. These stakes have a channel in them that directs the water from the hose down to the tip of the stake. I push the stake into the bag somewhat close to the roots...not too close, I've learned, because the tubers like to wrap around it 😂 I missed this step when I provided links to our sprinkler setup last year.

We added an additional item to the setup that helps tremendously in keeping the bags from ever drying out. My husband saw these barbed stakes being used at one of our local nurseries. We bought these and have attached them to the line going into each grow bag. These stakes direct the water from the hose to the bottom of the stake, into the middle/bottom of the grow bag. I'm hoping to put a reel together to actually show the assembly process. It's not hard at all!

I recently posted a pic of our grow bag setup and had several requests for information on how we set up our irrigation. I thought I would post it here for anyone who is interested. It really is a very simple setup.

This sounds like a lot, but I did this by myself in my garden. My husband ran it for the dahlias. I’ll list a link for the items but you wouldn’t have to get them at the store the links take you to. It’s just showing you what we used.

The hose that we use is ½ inch tubing.

You run this the full length of where your bags are. You can run two rows fairly close together like in the picture I shared.

This clamp goes on the end of the ½ hose, wherever it ends (the opposite end from the spigot)

The drip tubing is 1/8” and it is what attaches to the main line.

We use about a 2 foot length of the 1/8” hose from the main line to the bags. At the end going into the bag, we used the drip stakes so the roots of the plants get watered without soaking the tubers:

This tool is a Godsend for cutting the hose and for punching holes in the main line to insert the button.
