I'm at the airport, checking in. Just made it through security and was waiting for my bag to come through the scanner. A very feeble man with a walker and 2 hearing aids approaches one of the TSA people from behind and taps her on the shoulder. She doesn't feel it. I gesture to him so she knows to turn around. She turns. He asks where his bag is. She glances over and sees a bag waiting to be re- scanned. At the same time, another TSA agent shouts out, "Who does this bag belong to?" She shouts back: "This old guy at the end." !! Ouch. Factual, but ...

The auction venues of 2019 - Fundraising gala auctioneer Sherry Truhlar

Many are enjoying this downtime between Christmas and New Year's. If you're starting to prep for a 2020 auction and are thinking about venues, you may enjoy this look back at my venues from 2019.

Twenty-four clients held their fundraiser in a hotel in 2019. Everybody else chose a different auction venue. Here's where they went.

Last night the gala raised money for hospice (Capital Caring). Over 90% of their patients receive care in the home, and the group serves over 1200 patients a day. The development team opted for a play on The Wizard of Oz theme, using the "There's No Place Like Home" messaging and lots of rainbow colors. At the end of the night, I decided to get a tattoo as a remembrance of the evening.

Here are a few shots from last night's work in D.C. with CAIR Coalition- first sit-down for them on the 20th anniversary. It was a paddle raise event and was a solid first show. We heard stories from detained immigrants and various legal initiatives in courts. (And bonus that it was at the Mayflower. Love that art deco hotel.)

I always enjoy trips (work & pleasure) to Boston. Today I was admiring the colors of fall and the brisk temperature as I pulled into the hotel lot. And then I saw this sign and remembered why I'd have trouble *living* in Boston.

Sacred Heart Medical Center - Children's Miracle Network just sent me these photos from the Lunch at Tiffany's event. The event always decorates with Tiffany-colored blue, but another color or two is the accent. One year it was black and white stripes. Last year, it was diamonds / sparkle. This year, pink.

Presentation Academy had a big night tonight, setting a new record for financial aid fundraising. It is always fun to see what "takes off" in the appeal. (I was wow'd by the generous $1k gifts tonite.) And of course I always ❤❤ the stories from the Tower Award winners! One phrase I wrote down: Intention. Attention. No tension.

Today I am on a plane to KY for an auction, but according to Facebook, 9 years ago, I was still in NYC doing this. That job would have been for Catherine's. It seems longer ago than that. (Note how the clothes are pinned and cut up, but you never see it from the front.)

Sale of Rare Nazi-Era Porsche Sputters After Sotheby’s Auction Blunder

This story is painful to read. Bidders couldn't understand the auctioneer's accent at the Monterey Car Week auction this week in CA. "The 1st Porsche" was up for sale; bidding was expected to be frenzied. Opening bids were SUPPOSED to be $13 million; bidders *thought* they heard $30 million. Mistakes on the screen compounded the confusion. In the end, the car failed to meet the reserve price and didn't sell. If you don't subscribe, use one of your free articles with the NY Times this month to read the article. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/19/automobiles/porsche-type-64-auction.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&fbclid=IwAR2tnmovm1Es1RNSebSDZELeRNRq7n9y_UbwOQwQeCrqzlLVwdoslaUdfvY

The bidding for the Porsche Type 64, built by Ferdinand Porsche in 1939, was supposed to open at $13 million but instead started at $30 million.

Here's an action shot, from Catherine S. Read. V (next to me) was a speaker that evening, sharing her heartfelt love for the services of Neighborhood Health. (And, she pulled the winning raffle ticket.)
Question: Do you have any resource suggestions to find policy/procedure recommendations for accepting/logging/securing/separation of duties for auction donations?
