Webinar - Setting a gala strategy

This is required viewing if you are planning a virtual gala. Yesterday in my free COVID-19 "Conversation" series, I showed clips of the 5 approaches to virtual galas that have now formed, along with pros and cons of each style. Register for the series here below & specifically watch this month's "Conversation 4". https://www.redappleauctions.com/gala-strategy-2020/

Over the past weeks, I've spoken with dozens of people, watched hours of “live, online events,” and formed a few opinions.  Let's talk about some realistic ideas.

Sue Painter, business consulting and coaching, this is for you. I just finished a 3-day conference led by Bari and Blue. Topic was virtual events. And as is done (and you know it well), there was a pitch. I didn't opt to join. But it did take me back to how I met you, and I'm so glad I committed to Ali's program years ago. Her program and meeting/staying connected to you was a win-win.

Getting this out a day late than I should, but congratulations to Oakcrest School on its successful virtual event on *Friday* night. They did a studio-style virtual auction gala -- set-up in physically-distanced style -- in their school foyer, overseen by a volunteer who learned OBS for the occasion. I haven't been able to "see" this event for awhile, as my colleague Richard has been working with the school for 5 years. One of the pluses of the virtual gala -- I wasn't working on Friday and could watch. His personality shined through onscreen, too.

Congratulations to Friends of the Library, Montgomery County on their first virtual gala! They are trailblazers. We believe they are the 1st Friends of the Library group in the USA to do this.

Fired-Up Fundraising!

Gail Perry is one of the few fundraising consultants who isn't afraid to "throw a party" and raise some money. (And she knows how to throw a party!). We visited about virtual events last week on Facebook Live; it was a preview to having me chat with her "Insider's" private coaching group. You can watch the recording below .. and if you're needing some advice and motivation about major donors, capital campaigns, giving campaigns, and a wide spectrum of other fundraising needs, read more about her Insider's group here: https://www.gailperry.com/join-insiders/

When they set the theme. "2020, Catch the Vision," I don't think Boston's Park Street School was envisioning a virtual gala. But it is what it is, and they did a great job of making it their own with clever ideas for engagement during the gala. This is what it looked like from my side.

After one of the virtual galas last night, there was a really fun dance party. I got into it! I've blurred out the faces and names, but left my "square" so you can get a sense of how it looked. This is a creative example of donor engagement and I think it was appreciated.

Tonight I'm working 2 virtual events back-to-back. We just had an amazing school auction and I am excited about #2 in just a few minutes. Sooo proud of both of these schools for making the leap this year! (And my shoes are way more comfy than usual.)

Are you seeing examples of good customer service now? Here are 2 in the medical community: Today I got a love note from Kaiser (health insurance). It's sweet, in a sad way. They are checking on the emotional health of members and offering assistance. In another part of the country, some friends of mine got personal calls from their specialists (doctors) and dentist. Each provider encouraged them to stay healthy and avoid going to the hospital for fear of getting exposed to the virus. They instead encouraged their patients to call them directly first and they could set up an appointment elsewhere, or do house calls!

Opinion | The Coronavirus Is Showing Us Which Entrepreneurs Matter

In yesterday's webinar a question was posed about getting silent auction items in this environment. I responded, "No can do." Though the crux of this NY Times post is about the USA's misguided glorification of big business instead of small, it opens with a story about a silent auction procurement effort, explaining that Mom and Pop businesses -- not large multinational companies -- are responsible for charitable giving and support at a Main Street/local level. The businesses that most often donate to silent auctions risk disappearing. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/10/opinion/coronavirus-small-businesses.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

It was a big day here at company headquarters. After waiting *weeks* for this chair (actually years, as I've known about it for several years but cycled thru other options first), it finally arrived. I have several tools to help with movement in my office, but had never been able to find the perfect chair. I think this is a keeper. It isn't inexpensive, but for something you use everyday and have a desire to protect your hips/back, this Missouri-made chair might be for you.

Wonder Pictures

My friend Sheri Ratick Stroud created a YouTube channel to contain Wonder Pictures' episodes of "Love is Only 6' Away." Wonder Pictures has created 4 or 5 shorts (that is, mini-movies) & won several awards at some film festivals. But now they are stuck inside so they are entertaining themselves (and others) with their mini soap opera. If you want to write an episode, they would appreciate it! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuPc3i8zRQi1-Zlc14f9OZQ?disable_polymer=true

For those of you writing emergency e-appeals, here's a guide. Steven Screen gives specific examples for how hospitals & needy schools can get money NOW, plus he gives tips, like a 7-point system for a less-than-300 word email. I'm not sure I agree with him on the lower open rates, though. More people at home seem to be opening and reading more emails, not less, in my experience. https://worklessraisemore.com/coronavirus-e-appeal/?inf_contact_key=70ced88797abde389ec972a2dac3a303680f8914173f9191b1c0223e68310bb1

04/04/2020

I'm so sad to report that my friend Olan Montgomery passed earlier today from COVID-19-related complications. He'd spent nearly a month in the hospital, came through a medically-induced coma, and just yesterday was moved out of ICU into a step-down unit. He was responding to commands and had opened his eyes.

I initially met him when I modeled for Catherine's and Fashion Bug in NYC, where he did both hair and makeup. (He was fast at applying makeup and often used his fingers for eyeshadow.)

He expanded into painting, creating large, bright canvases. He reinvented himself as a photographer (more on that below), and then again reinvented himself into a full-blown actor.

He frequently posted shots of his acting jobs on Facebook, including jobs in more well-known productions, such as Stranger Things. He adored his pets, especially his little dog, Al.

I really thought he was going to make it through this and was looking forward to hearing his take on it.

The last time I tested with him was August 2016, not yet 4 years ago. When I got to his apartment he said, "You don't want make-up, do you? Au natural is what's in." And I said, "HELL YES I need makeup! This isn't modeling; this is for regular WORK."

He was having fun playing with his iPhone 360 landscapes and doing the artsy-things.

He'd say, "Put your hands out, like you're holding something for sale," and I'd say, "That's not really what I auction..."

We went around Times Square looking for interesting signs that I might be able to use in my marketing. "I work in Chicago," I said, looking at the advertisement for the musical, "Maybe I could use that at some point, like if I do a workshop or something?"

"Look at that sign," he pointed, "It says "Hottest Ticket in Town" -- go stand under that one."

We traipsed all over, with me standing under signs like "Fun!" and "Exactly what you wished for."

You'll see I was wearing flip-flops by the end.

We got enough shots that I was able to use some for my Red Apple Auctions website and materials, but most shots never saw the light of day, until now. Here is a smattering of those, complements of Olan. He's left this earth for more creative endeavors.

What the CARES Act Means for Nonprofits - Qgiv Blog

I've seen several summaries of the new CARES act and how it affects nonprofit. Here's one.

The $2 trillion coronavirus stimulus package, called the CARES Act, was signed into law on Friday afternoon… but what does that mean for nonprofits and donors? Here are some of the highlights: For organizations with 500 or fewer employees 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(19) organizations with fewer than 500 ...
