It’s hard to believe it’s been five years since I first popped up a card table on the devil strip of my front yard, just trying to sell a few mint plants from the garden and make content for a blog I had just started: Lepley & Co.
What began as a search for purpose and a way to escape the boredom of the pandemic has completely changed the trajectory of my life. Fresh out of law school and waiting for a repeatedly delayed bar exam, I found myself slowly shifting from the promise of a stable legal career to the uncertainty and adventure of entrepreneurship.
From that front yard setup, often working alone or convincing Bri and Curtis to help drag plants up and down the driveway, to today, with 30 employees across several local businesses and Main Street industries, this journey has been nothing short of profound. Thousands of people have contributed threads to the tapestry that is Lepley & Co., from customers and community members to local leaders and online supporters who’ve followed along since the beginning. Every interaction has helped shape our business, and in turn, my life.
I'm deeply grateful to every member of our team, past and present. Whether you spent years with us or just a few days, you helped build what we are becoming.
I wish I could say it’s all been fun, but any small business owner knows the weight that comes with starting and growing something real. Early on, people would ask how the pandemic affected our business. The honest answer? We were born from it. It is our business. Five years later, we still don’t know what “normal” feels like.
In business, there are no failures, only lessons. As we often remind our students, it’s all about “iterations and pivots.” Even hard decisions, like closing our Massillon Depot location, a space lovingly restored by my family, have led to beauty. That same building now houses a local photography studio, continuing the legacy of entrepreneurship in Massillon.
From that card table to becoming a vendor at Northside Marketplace, and now managing the entire facility, I’ve had the privilege of playing a small part in the story of hundreds of local businesses.
If I could wish for one thing in the next five years, it would be stability—growth rooted in our core values, meaningful careers for our team, and a safe, inclusive place where our customers can feel proud to support.
Here are just a few of my favorite moments from along the way.
Lots of love,
Justin Lepley 🤍💐🌿
