Types of Apologies
1. Genuine Apology
Meaning: Sincere regret with full responsibility.
Example:
“I was wrong. I hurt you, and I’m truly sorry.”
2. Defensive Apology
Meaning: Apologizes but includes excuses.
Example:
“I’m sorry, but you misunderstood what I meant.”
3. Conditional Apology
Meaning: Shifts blame to the other person’s feelings.
Example:
“I’m sorry if you felt hurt.”
4. Forced Apology
Meaning: Given under pressure, not from the heart.
Example:
“Fine. I said sorry. Happy now?”
5. Delayed Apology
Meaning: Comes long after the damage is done.
Example:
“I know it’s been months, but I guess I should apologize.”
6. Public Apology
Meaning: Made openly in front of others.
Example:
“I want to apologize publicly for my mistake.”
7. Strategic Apology
Meaning: Used to avoid punishment or consequences.
Example:
“I’m really sorry — it won’t happen again.” (said to escape trouble)
8. Passive Apology
Meaning: Soft, indirect, unclear.
Example:
“Sorry about that.” (without eye contact or ownership)
