Phuket, Thailand: Minairal and The Litter Club are partnering to help reduce single use plastic and promote more sustainable choices across Phuket.

Through the partnership, Minairal will support The Litter Club’s work to reduce plastic pollution, deliver Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) programs in schools and universities, and conduct research into how ESD can contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Collaboration: Why Agreement Was Never the Point

Many people think collaboration means everyone agrees. I think the opposite is often true. When people agree too quickly, important ideas can be missed. Real collaboration is not about creating agreement. It is about helping people with different views work together towards a shared goal.

UNESCO defines collaboration as the ability to solve problems while respecting perspectives that differ from your own. Those last words matter. Different opinions are not something to avoid. They are often where the best solutions begin.

Think about keeping a beach clean. It takes local vendors, hotels, fishermen, local government, volunteers and visitors working together. They may never agree on who is responsible for litter, but they can still work together to improve the beach. Waiting for everyone to agree usually means nothing gets done.

That is why the Eco Lab approaches teamwork differently. We are not teaching children how to win a vote. We are teaching them to listen, ask questions and build solutions with people who think differently. The goal is not a classroom where everyone agrees. It is a classroom where everyone contributes.

Collaboration also has risks. Sometimes people avoid difficult conversations just to keep the peace. Sometimes bold ideas are watered down until nobody objects. Sometimes participation is only an illusion because the decisions have already been made.

That challenge applies to me as well. As the facilitator, I design the activities and shape the discussion. If I am not careful, I can create the appearance of collaboration while still controlling the outcome.

One question guides my doctoral research at Prince of Songkla University. Does the Eco Lab build genuine collaboration across different perspectives, or does it simply produce well behaved group work? That is something I want to measure with evidence, not assumptions.

Today is World Elephant Day

Did you know...they "hear" low-frequency signals through their feet. Elephants have specialized vibration-sensitive nerve endings (Pacinian corpuscles) in the soles of their feet and the tip of their trunk. This allows them to pick up seismic rumbles generated by other elephants from several miles away.

Thanks so much to Taj and the team from (Malin Films) for dropping by the Eco-Lab and bringing the caps you had collected during your shoot in Rawai.

I love the fact that as the Sustainability Officer (CSO) your role is to make sure that all materials used during the production are recycled, composted or diverted from landfill wherever possible.

Strategic Competence: Why Knowing What to Do Is the Easy Part

Most people already know what should be done. Beaches should be clean. Waste should be refused. Yet we can fill a room with people who agree and still see nothing happen. Knowing is easy. Doing is the hard part. That is where strategic competence matters.

UNESCO defines strategic competence as the ability to develop and implement actions for sustainability. The key word is implement. Coming up with an idea is the easy part. Turning that idea into something that works, lasts and creates real change is much harder. It takes planning, persistence, resources and the ability to adapt when things do not go as expected.

The Litter Club taught me this lesson. Deciding to tackle litter took one afternoon. Building a community movement that has continued for years has taken patience and consistency. A beach cleanup that happens once is an event. A beach that stays clean is the result of strategy.

The same idea sits at the heart of the Eco Lab. Children can design a brilliant refuse first solution in one lesson. The real learning begins when they test it, improve it and encourage others to use it. Success is not measured by a good idea. It is measured by whether that idea survives after the excitement has faded.

Strategic competence has its own risks. We can become obsessed with new ideas when simple proven solutions work just as well. We can also spend so much time planning that we never begin. Strategy without action achieves nothing, and strategy without values can be used for good or bad.

I have to ask the same question of myself. Am I building an Eco Lab that creates lasting change, or simply designing a programme that looks impressive on paper?

That is exactly what my doctoral research at Prince of Songkla University will investigate. Does the Eco Lab help children turn ideas into lasting action, or does it simply teach them how to design attractive projects? I want to answer that question with evidence, not assumptions.

We are building an exciting new Eco-Lab at RIS Phuket for our Grade 1 to Grade 9 students.

But here’s the catch: because it’s an Eco-Lab, buying a bunch of shiny, brand-new plastic items and tools feels completely wrong. 🚫🛒

We want to practice exactly what we teach: Reuse, Repurpose, and Redesign. 🔄

That’s where you come in! We are asking you to raid your:

🚗 Garage - old tools (gardening, building, hand tools or powered), cutters, brushes, screws, clean scrap materials, etc.

📦 Cupboards & Shelves -containers, jars, boxes, stationery, buckets, bins, etc.

🏠 Storage spaces (sewing machine, Dremel, measuring devices, lamps, scales, anything that deserves a second life.

Instead of purchasing new items, we want to show our students how things we no longer use can become incredible tools for learning about sustainability.

Your forgotten "clutter" could be the exact spark a Grade 3 student needs for their next eco-project!

Let's build a truly sustainable space from the ground up without buying a thing. 🛠️✨
