For those who are interested, our featured installation by Sawit Prasertphan ‘Estranged Landscape’ is still ongoing at the CMU Art and Culture Center (near Nimmanhemin) at their Annex room. It will be open today and tomorrow (19-20 July, 10:00-17:00) a map of the place is in the comment.

As the name suggests, Syntopia is a coming-together of people, objects, practices, and ideas at a specific place and time. Over the course of two days, the event aims to foster collaboration among artists, media practitioners, academics, and beyond by providing a platform that encourages interaction across established boundaries––boundaries that may, in turn, give rise to unexpected connections.

The 2025 edition is centered around the notion of Entangled Agencies, examining how media arts and design respond to a world increasingly woven by complex relations–between bodies and machines, environments and technologies, humans and the more-than-human. This year’s symposium highlights interdisciplinary and experimental practices that engage listening, touch, temporality, and transformation as ways to understand and shape our becoming.

We’ll explore topics like media ecologies, synthetic biology, machine collaboration, and sonic culture––offering a space to imagine new modes of connection and co-creation across art, science, and society. Expect a vibrant mix of research, artistic experiments, and thought-provoking discussions.

🧩 Hosted by the Media Arts and Design Program, Faculty of Fine Arts, Chiang Mai University, Syntopia continues its mission to support academic research, artistic exploration, and rethinking the boundaries of the creative economy in an increasingly troubled and globally connected world.

We’re excited to welcome Prapat Jiwarangsan, acclaimed Thai visual artist and filmmaker, and Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn, producer and academic from Chulalongkorn University, to SYNTOPIA 2025 for a special screening and talk session.

📽 The screening consists of 4 shorts and 1 medium length film, which will be screened in 3 sessions with talks in between each session.

1st session:
The Asylum (2015, 9 min)
Destination Nowhere (2018, 7 min).
2nd session:
Ploy (2020, 51 min).
3rd session:
Myanmar Anatomy (2023, 22 min)
Parasite Family (2022, 5 min).

🎓 Prapat Jiwarangsan:
Prapat Jiwarangsan is a Thai visual artist and filmmaker. Graduated from London’s Royal College of Art, Jiwarangsan has worked since 2011. In his creative explorations, he usually incorporates a variety of media, especially photographs, slides, and video, in order to investigate and represent the relationships between history, memory, and politics in Thailand. His installations have appeared in Bangkok, London, Berlin, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, and Singapore while his videos have screened at international film events such as Berlin International Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, International Film Festival Oberhausen, Ann Arbor Film Festival, and Singapore International Film Festival.

🎓 Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn:
Graiwoot Chulphongsathorn is a lecturer at the Department of Motion Pictures and Still Photography, Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University. He holds a PhD from Queen Mary University of London. Chulphongsathorn’s area of research are in eco-cinema, post-anthropocentrism, film theory, and artist’s moving image. He has published numerous works in international journals and textbooks, including Screen, Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (JCMS), Cahiers du Cinéma, Moving Image Review and Art Journal (MIRAJ), and The Routledge Companion to Asian Cinema. In addition to his academic work, Chulphongsathorn has produced Prapat Jiwarangsan’s films and installations since 2015.
