MTN urges public to embrace digital payments amid cash shortages at MoMo agent outlets
MTN MoMo has called on the public to adopt digital transactions as a long-term solution to ongoing cash shortages at mobile money agent outlets across the country.
In a statement issued Tuesday, the company acknowledged customer frustrations over limited cash availability at some MoMo agent locations, and assured the public that steps are being taken to resolve the issue in partnership with financial institutions.
“We are working with all banks and partners to create interoperable digital payment solutions,” the statement read. “This includes MoMo Pay, international remittances, school fees payment, and bank push-and-pull services.”
Francis Matseketsa, CEO of MTN MoMo Fintech, emphasized the company’s commitment to promoting financial inclusion and urged both customers and merchants to shift towards mobile money transactions. He pointed to services such as international remittances and school fees payments—already accepted at over 30 schools in South Sudan—as examples of digital alternatives to cash.
Hussein Samanya, Senior Manager at MTN MoMo, also addressed widespread concerns about agents charging customers illegal withdrawal fees. He said SMS alerts were sent to warn customers and urged them to report any agent engaging in such practices.
The company stressed the importance of transitioning toward a cashless society, acknowledging that while South Sudan is still at an early stage of digital payment adoption, building a more financially stable economy depends on reducing the public’s dependence on physical cash.
“Creating a cashless society is a journey which cannot be completed overnight,” MTN MoMo stated. “We believe the journey has started and we all need to embrace it.”
