Marc Chagall — When Growing a Rose Becomes a Journey 🌹🎨

I first grew Marc Chagall simply to discover whether it could truly perform well in Singapore’s hot, humid climate. I wanted my own experience—not just a seller’s promise—before recommending it to anyone else.

But what began as a growing experiment unexpectedly became a journey of discovery.

From a rose whose name meant nothing to me, I discovered the artist Marc Chagall, Delbard’s extraordinary Les Roses de Peintres, and the beautiful idea of turning a flower into a living canvas.

Sometimes we grow a rose simply to see it bloom.

And sometimes, a rose quietly opens another door and teaches us something we never expected to learn. 🌹

There are roses you admire for their perfect shape, roses you grow for their fragrance, and then there are roses like Marc Chagall—roses that make you stop because every flower seems to have been painted rather than simply bloomed.

Looking at these blooms, I can understand why Delbard chose the name Marc Chagall.

Bred by G. Delbard in France in 2013, Marc Chagall is a Floribunda distinguished by its fascinating mixture of pink, cream and yellow. But what makes this variety particularly interesting is that its colors never seem completely predictable.

🌹 Le Blanc — Pure Elegance in White

Le Blanc — meaning “white” in French — is an exquisitely feminine Japanese rose created by renowned breeder Junko Kawamoto in 2011. Delicate, graceful, and wonderfully romantic, Le Blanc has the ethereal beauty of a white chiffon wedding dress.

The blooms begin in soft white brushed with the faintest pale pink tint. As the flowers mature, the blush gradually disappears, leaving behind a luminous pure white.

What makes Le Blanc especially captivating is its unusual petal texture. Each petal is delicately notched and lace-like along the edges, creating soft waves and a wonderfully fluffy, airy appearance. When fully open, the flower forms a relaxed, flat bloom with layers of ruffled petals that seem almost weightless.

And Le Blanc is not only beautiful to look at.

Its flowers carry a strong, sweet and distinctly feminine fragrance, adding another layer of romance to this elegant rose.

The plant itself has a refined character that perfectly complements its flowers. Slender branches are dressed with relatively small, matte foliage, allowing the white blooms to become the true focal point. With a manageable height of approximately 80 cm–1 m and relatively few thorns, Le Blanc is also pleasantly easy to handle.

As a Floribunda, it produces flowers repeatedly throughout the growing season and remains compact enough to perform beautifully in a container while also being suitable for garden planting.

So I carried them inside and kept photographing them under the light.

Some roses become more beautiful the longer you look at them.

Every layer of petals reveals something new, and every angle tells a different story.

Eventually, I stopped searching for the right words.

Because some kinds of beauty…

are simply meant to be admired in silence.

“What is it about roses that makes me fall so deeply in love?”

Perhaps it isn’t their beauty alone.

Perhaps it’s the countless days of waiting, nurturing, hoping… and even the disappointments along the way. It is that entire journey that makes the moment a rose finally blooms so unforgettable.

🆔: Kizuna - A Symbol of Enduring Bonds and Resilience.

One of Kizuna’s most enchanting qualities is its ever-changing color. Fresh blooms begin in warm apricot yellow, then slowly soften into glowing shades of peach and salmon pink before finishing with creamy outer petals. As each bloom matures, it creates a beautiful watercolor effect, making no two flowers exactly alike.

The blooms release a delightful fruity fragrance—sweet, fresh and inviting—adding another layer of enjoyment whether planted in the garden or grown in a container near your living space.

Kizuna is also a gardener’s delight. It flowers continuously throughout the seasons, producing generous flushes again and again with very little pause. Combined with its excellent disease resistance, glossy dark green foliage, and upright semi-climbing habit reaching around 1.2 m tall and 60 cm wide, it is both beautiful and dependable.

My First Experience Growing Clematis in Singapore

This is the very first Clematis I have ever grown—and I chose to grow it here in Singapore.

When I first shared my idea of testing how Clematis would perform in Singapore’s hot and humid climate, many people discouraged me.

They said, “Clematis only blooms in cooler regions. Singapore feels like summer all year round, so it will never flower. You’ll probably get nothing but green leaves.”

I understood their concerns, but I still wanted to try. I wanted to see the result with my own eyes instead of simply accepting that it was impossible.

And now, here are the photos of the first Clematis I have ever grown in my life.

Watching it bloom was truly fascinating. Its petals opened slowly, layer by layer, as though the flower was patiently revealing its beauty. Even when the bloom began to fade, the petals did not fall all at once. They dropped gently—one by one, day by day.

The entire beautiful performance lasted almost two full weeks.

To me, that is amazing.

This Clematis reminded me that we should not be too quick to decide that something is impossible, especially when we have never tried it ourselves.
