The surname CAMARA is common across several West African countries, including Brazil, Burkina Faso, Sierra Ivory Coast, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Guinea-Conakry, Senegal Sierra Leone and Mali. Among the Camara people, it is traditional to name sons Demba (or Abubakar), which is why you’ll often find individuals from Guinea Senegal or The Gambia with the first name Demba and the surname Camara.

One of the most iconic figures bearing this name is Abubakar Demba Camara, widely regarded as the greatest West African jazz singer of all time. Hailing from Guinea-Conakry, Demba Camara was the lead vocalist of the renowned band Bembeya Jazz. Tragically, his life was cut short in a car accident in Dakar in 1973. Despite his untimely death, Demba’s contribution to West African jazz remains a lasting legacy, and his influence on the genre is still celebrated today.
