The first design week was launched in 2002, and today this theme week has supported Stockholm Furniture & Light Fair in making Stockholm a must-place to be for purchasers, architects, designers and journalists during week 6 each year. Examples of events during previous design weeks include receptions, dinner parties, “after fair” meetings, vernissage cocktails and open houses at a wide variety of showrooms, design schools, restaurants and studios. To further promote the design week experience, visitors are provided with a special guide “The official guide to Stockholm Design Week” presenting all the events together with suggestions to the best shopping, restaurants and bars all over Stockholm. In August 2018, it was the premiere of a new annual design week in Stockholm - Summer Design Week. The event is a summer edition of the success of Stockholm Design Week in February. During the same period, Formex is going on at Stockholmsmässan, which is the Nordic region's largest interior design fair for the industry. During this week, Stockholm is filled with interesting events to celebrate Nordic design.
Summer Design Week gathers design actors to promote Nordic design and lift Stockholm as a design city. In order to broaden the design concept, there is a large variety of events during the week that include different perspectives of what design can be. The week highlights the hottest trends in design. People living in and visiting Stockholm gather to visit open showrooms, talks, exhibitions and mingle nights.
All in all, Stockholm Design Week and Summer Design Week have developed into a melting pot where just about everyone in anyway connected to or interested in Scandinavian and Nordic design meet and thrive, bringing home new impulses, contacts and inspiration.
