We first came to Zabola Estate, Transylvania eight years ago, as travellers. We could not have known back then that, years later, we would return as partners.

What stayed with us from that first visit was not the room, the dinner or the fireplace. It was the feeling of entering a world with its own rhythm. A family estate shaped by centuries of history, surrounded by forests, horses and wildlife, where everyday life felt connected to the same story.

It taught us something about the difference between travelling and simply being a tourist. About what it means to become immersed in a slower way of living. To walk without being in a hurry, to listen to the forest, to notice how the light changes from day to night and allow everything to reveal itself.

This is how we choose to show the places we care about. We do not create according to the pace demanded by social media algorithms. We want to leave room for observation, emotion and curiosity. Slow living, and perhaps slow luxury too, deserves a slower approach.

Eight years after our first visit, we now see Zabola Estate with greater familiarity, but still with the same sense of wonder. We are proud to include this remarkable part of Transylvania in the journeys we create.

Our friends Irina and Tavi worked alongside a wonderful team on “Matter, Almost”, a contemporary art exhibition hosted in a beautifully restored barn in Viscri.

We visited recently and beyond the art work itself, we loved having Irina there taking us through the story behind the exhibition, how it came together and the stories of each artist and their craft.

Projects like this inspire us deeply. We believe art, in all its forms, matters because it opens minds, challenges the way we see things and invites us to look at the world around us with different eyes.

One of the things we admired most about this project is the intention behind it: to bring art closer to people and make culture accessible, including towards the local community. This is also why the exhibition is free to visit.

If you find yourself in Viscri in the coming weeks, “Matter, Almost” is open until September 15. 🤍

is a beautiful example of what can happen when heritage is restored with care, patience and respect for what was already there.

After decades of neglect, Éva Ugron, a descendant of the family and her husband Miklós Maróty began the long process of bringing the castle back to life. Today, its historic spaces can be experienced once again, alongside a garden with centuries-old chestnut and maple trees, comfortable rooms, a restored chapel and generous spaces for events, gatherings or celebrations.

We have a lot of respect for projects that find a way to preserve heritage while giving it a purpose in the present. It was a pleasure to spend a few days here and have the time to understand the story behind it.

We rarely pass through Viscri without stopping at DeViscri.

Irina and Tavi are dear friends and we enjoy seeing what new pieces have found their way into the shop, many of them made by artisans we have come to know and admire.

We usually stay for coffee, a conversation and inevitably longer than planned.

When people ask us “Why Transylvania?”, places like this are part of our answer and the people who care deeply, in such a personal and thoughtful way. .

Since we started TravelArte, we’ve met hundreds of people. Around tables, in villages, estates and guesthouses, at events and on research trips. We’ve had countless conversations about what we do and how we do it.

This summer, one question came up surprisingly often: 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐝𝐨 𝐰𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐀𝐫𝐭𝐞 𝐣𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲?

We visit many places, meet many people and explore lots of ideas. We are curious by nature so we want to see and understand as much as we can. Only a few eventually find their way into the journeys we create.

Our process matters as much as the outcome, but there isn’t really a simple checklist. There is, however, a way we look at a place and, just as importantly, a way we choose to share it.

We try to resist both extremes: romanticising Transylvania into a timeless fairy tale or reducing it to a set of tourist attractions. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐮𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐛𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭, 𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐝, 𝐞𝐯𝐨𝐥𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐧:

• 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐞 - we look at what survives, who cares for it and why it matters today.
• 𝐕𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 - we avoid treating them as scenery frozen in time; they are living communities.
• 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 - the landscape is part of daily life and cultural history, not just a view.
• 𝐓𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 - for us, they are living knowledge, carried forward by people.
• 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 - we care about research, patience and honesty in the use of materials over cosmetic perfection.
• 𝐆𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 - we love connecting food to season, local producers, memory, place and technique.
• 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚 - we do not allow the cliché to define our journeys. When we started, we even wondered whether we should consider it at all. We accept it as part of the mythology, but not as the definition of our destinations.

We started this project by sharing Transylvania as we see it.

Today, we create experiences for international travellers, brands and communities. We love designing them for those who travel differently.

Five years since we had last been at and last weekend we finally returned.

We remembered it well but we found a place that had grown beyond what we knew. More has been restored, more has been created around it and the history of the estate has been given new ways to be discovered.

We spent a long time inside “1680 Reloaded”, their immersive exhibition about the castle and the world around it centuries ago. History can so easily become a collection of dates and names. Here, it is something you can step into, look at closely and understand it a little better. We loved the care behind it.

And then there was the garden which meant something entirely different to our girls: freedom to run, explore and spend most of their time outside. Feeding the goats was, naturally, very high on their list.

Perhaps what we appreciated most was simply seeing what years of work can do to a place like this. A historic building restored is one thing. Continuing to build a living project around it, year after year, is another.

For our community, *𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗘𝟭𝟬* offers *10% off* for bookings through Castel Daniel’s website, between 15 August and 15 September 2026 and for stays up to 15 January 2027.

Certain places leave an impression through grand gestures, while others do it through thoughtful details.

During our stay at , we loved discovering how Transylvania has inspired its design through meaningful collaborations with local artisans and carefully chosen natural materials. Handcrafted ceramics from , upcycled blue glassware by and the iconic Saxon blue woven throughout the interiors blend beautifully together.

These details reflect a thoughtful approach to hospitality, one that we truly appreciate. We especially loved how the calming shades of Saxon blue and the subtle scent of Nordic pine became part of the experience, creating a quiet dialogue between the interiors and the forests beyond.
