MISS UNIVERSE IS FACING A CORPORATE POWER STRUGGLE
The Miss Universe Organization is dealing with a growing dispute over corporate authority, franchise agreements and the governance of the global Miss Universe brand.
The latest development came September 18, when JKN Universe LLC, doing business as the Miss Universe Organization, said it does not recognize franchise and licensing arrangements involving Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore.
According to JKN Universe LLC, the arrangements were not supported by a valid licensing framework and the six countries' delegates would therefore not be eligible for the 75th Miss Universe competition.
But MU East has challenged that position.
MU East says the September 18 statement was not reviewed or approved by its side of the ownership structure. It maintains that JKN Universe LLC operates through a 50:50 structure involving MU East and MU West and that MU East holds exclusive rights to operate, promote and develop the brand across 95 Eastern territories under the Hemisphere Agreement.
Nawat Itsaragrisil is also at the center of the dispute. MUO has questioned his authority within the global organization, while MU East recognizes him as its appointed CEO.
The disagreement also includes questions surrounding commercial revenue, payment authorization and governance connected with the upcoming Puerto Rico event.
For now, the six countries should not simply be described as "banned." Their status is being disputed by the two sides.
The 75th Miss Universe competition is scheduled for November 24 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
