“Hindi ba ito ang dream mo?“

For this couple, this wedding, which took place days after Valentine's Day, is a dream come true. For the bride, the groom is her “greatest love.” “Wala kong ibang minahal kung hindi sya.” The groom, on the other hand, is certain his bride is the woman destined for him. “Ang daming dumaan sa buhay namin. Pero ang dami ring dahilan para ipaglaban kung ano man ang meron kami.”

After everything that they had gone through, they finally walked together towards the aisle, this time, with their two beautiful children cheering them on. “Isn’t this [wedding] your dream? Tapos na (It is finished)! You are utterly blessed,” asked the bride's mom who perfectly captured the couple's moment. Truly, the union is not only parent-approved, but also God- and family-approved! Praise God for your answered prayer.

Communication is a skill we must learn to do very well, especially in marriage. When we communicate well, we are able to clear our relationship of debris that builds up as we go about life. This "debris" could be hurts, frustrations, and anything else that makes us feel disconnected from each other.

It may sound simple, but real communication takes intentionality and determination. Here are a few ways to keep communicating well.

1) Less screen time.
Screens fill our worlds with "noise" that, most of the time, adds little real value to life. Turn them off and have a conversation instead.

2) Ask open-ended, meaningful questions.
Take a real interest in what your spouse thinks by asking them. Don't be surprised if you learn something new.

3) Respond thoughtfully.
Too many times we respond to questions with knee-jerk reactions. Take time to process and articulate what you really think; don't settle for the easier response. This will enliven and enrich your communication.

Of course, this list is far from exhaustive. The key thing to remember is to keep the conversation going.

If you feel like your communication is lacking, be patient! It takes time to learn these skills together.

It all started with a simple wave online. Who would have thought such a brave but seemingly innocent gesture would signal the beginning of an eternal love story? A conversation led to another, the next thing they knew, they were talking about the future.

For Don, Christel Joy was the answer to a lifelong prayer. “Nagpapasalamat ako sa Ama ‘pagkat ang panata ko, ang kahilingan ko sa Kanya, ay dininig Niya. At ikaw iyon, aking mabuting asawa. Marami akong mga [kapintasan] pero lahat iyon, hindi mo nakitang [kamalian]. Lahat iyon, tinanggap mo.”

From regular dates to weekly fun times at arcades, to building a family and future together, the bride could only be grateful to the Father. “We have gone through a lot. We have gone this far. I am thankful it is you I have all these times.”

We witnessed that same gratefulness and deep, overflowing love on your special day. We are an instant fan of the bride’s eye for details, and the groom’s wisdom, patience, and calmness. From Kinder to forever.

God, for sure, has a beautiful plan for this couple whose love story dates all the way back to kindergarten days. Robert wasn’t even Jaralyn’s best friend then, but he was one of the few she remembered. Decade after, they met again. Jaralyn would attribute this sudden reunion to the Red String Theory and, of course, to God, who predestined their permanent union.

According to Japanese and Chinese beliefs, there is an invisible red string tied around the pinky finger of two people who are destined to be together. Legend has it that these people, connected by this invisible red string, will have an important story, a joint mission to fulfill, regardless of the time, place, or circumstances. Eventually, they will find each other. The red string might get tangled, twisted, and stretched, but could never break. The same is also our wish for you, Sir Robert and Ma’am Jaralyn—a bond that might bend but would never break!

Every marriage starts with the words, "I do", but all lasting marriages are filled with countless, daily "I dos". To choose to truly love, we must choose "I do" in the day-to-day interactions of life.

I do...make you a priority.
I do...speak to you with kindness.
I do...practice integrity when you're not around.
I do...choose to honor you.
I do...choose make (significant) time for you.
I do...decide to stop and listen to you.
I do...forgive you as Christ has forgiven me.
I do...choose to never give up on you or us.
I do...choose put my phone down and have a real conversation with you.

This list could go on forever. A healthy marriage is filled with a lifetime of love as demonstrated through actions.
Feelings of love are great, and words expressing love are romantic. But make sure your feelings and words of love are always supported by actions of love.
