Growing up on an island, damper wasn’t just bread or another breakfast item, it was and still is a soul food, a memory in the making.

I remember when my mum would wake up at the crack of dawn to bake, just so we had something in our tummies before the school bell rang.

It was simple, flour, margarine, sugar and water but it meant so much.
Even today, a taste of freshly baked damper reminds us of home.
