As the new flower season approaches, I wanted to share what is happening at Islington Flower Farm and how your support will help us continue giving back to our local community.

My enthusiasm has been reinvigorated this week after having a couple of lovely warm days in Mosgiel. I am ever so hopeful that we are going to have a much better flower season than last year and can’t wait to see what treasures will appear from the soil!

Last year, the terrible winds brought down a number of trees and made it unsafe to open the Flower Hut, so we did not have the chance to build the momentum we had hoped for. This season, we are all very excited to get going again.

Islington Flower Farm is our home garden, and we use it as a way to raise money for local Mosgiel and Dunedin charities, clubs, and people doing amazing work in our community. We are so grateful to be able to do this, and we very much appreciate your support.

The Islington Flower Farm will offer garden-style bouquets, eggs, and honey, all produced here at Islington. It will be open on selected days each week, and I will share those days as the season gets underway.

Alongside this, we will hold our charity sale events for peonies and potted dahlias. I will post the dates for these closer to the time. While last year was a challenging season for flowers this has translated into a fabulous season for dahlia tubers. This year we will have plenty for sale, and a much wider variety than our last sale in 2024.

We don't sell dahlia tubers. We pot them up and get them growing for you so success in your garden is almost 100% guaranteed.

I was very busy last summer supporting beautiful brides with their flowers. It is a real privilege to be able to offer this low cost option for wedding flowers, especially in these current times. This season I will be doing DIY wedding flowers again, and welcome donations to Dog Rescue Dunedin Charitable Trust in return.

It is also a pleasure to have gardening clubs and local retirement villages visit the garden at Islington. The garden house has recently been renovated, and it is a lovely space to put on tea and coffee and enjoy a chat.

Winter has certainly bitten this week, but those lovely sunny days have felt like little gifts after the frosty starts. With more cold weather on the way, I wanted to share a few bright moments that have made me smile.

I received a message from a friend I visited over a month ago, when I took along the last of our hydrangeas to share. This week she sent me the message below, and it absolutely warmed my heart.

I was also lucky enough to find a bucket at the back door from my neighbour, complete with a wonderful cardoon pup and a generous little burst of kindness. It is now proudly planted close to the house, where I can admire it.

My seeds have really started to take off this week, which has brought so much delight. The kids have been happy to see the shoots appear, racing each other to grab the spray bottle and give them a water. There are still lots to come!

I have shared some photos of the hellebores I picked and popped into an old teapot to brighten up the bench for the weekend. I have also potted a few and placed them on the table, where they are looking very cheerful so far...

Harper has been busy packaging up the seeds she harvested and dried. We decided to get a stamp, but she insisted on handwriting every envelope herself — a small, beautiful detail that makes me very happy.

It's truly been long-awaited, but I've finally had the chance on this beautiful autumn day to get outside amongst the frosted flowers. The cut flower gardens were crying out for a touch of TLC, and our dahlias look ready for lifting, thanks to Andrew's efforts today - and the wonderful news is that the tubers are looking really good, despite last season's blooms not quite living up to expectations. What a fantastic boost for our charity dahlia tuber sale in October! I'm very grateful to our friend Bev, who's worked hard to resurrect the Fergusson windmill from its 15-year slumber under the hedge, to its new home beside the flower hut - I'm absolutely thrilled it's visible from my kitchen window. The kids have been busy harvesting seeds and brainstorming ways to spread the joy, with Grandma pitching in and making a real difference, as always where she can.
Our latest batch of honey has also arrived and we are loving it on our crumpets. Harper made Rice Bubble slice this morning for the lunch boxes this week. Yum!
