You never know until you try! I don't tend to do flowers in winter as I generally work with only what I grow here at Maytrees and everything seems so bare and frozen at this time of year! But what do you know - there is plenty of textures to work with even in a Dunedin Winter. Truly seasonal flowers!

I love love love Chrysanthemums, they let the flowers roll long after the chill has done for other flowers (not the Scabiosa 'Fama white'!). This was a June bouquet (what was with those crazy delphinium right?).

This year though, the Chrysanthemums have been giving me a bit of a nightmare, as white rust has swept right through them. It is really hard to manage and has decimated some varieties. I'm still learning when it comes to Chrysanthemum. As someone who grows organically, there are a few options. I'm going to strip the clumps right back and heat treat them in hot water and uses various other cultural methods to check it this year. Hoping for a less wet season! Will let you know how I get on. Any advice from more experienced growers out there?

My advice is, if you see those white pustules....get on removing them asap!

People often tell me, with supprise, how long our flowers lasted for them. This is probably because, despite their "softer garden nature," they go from the field, to the bucket, to the vase and to you, in just hours, not days. That way you can enjoy them longer 💛.

A season of Local Flowers 2025-26 at Maytrees. What a beautiful season, of bizzare weather and new flower joy!

With the cold comes time to reflect on the season just past, what was gorgeous, what flopped and how to move forward from here. Every season has more to teach us and this year the perennials really shined, but I missed the autumn annuals; the cosmos, amaranthus, marigolds, didiscus, calendula and cress etc that I should a would a could a planted out in January.

WARNING: May cause more extreme flower joy next season! Watch this space ###
