The Waiting Season
One thing gardening has taught me over the years is that not every season is a season of action.
Sometimes it's a season of waiting.
At Hazelwood Grove, we're currently waiting for contracts to be finalised before we can move forward with many of our plans for the property. And if I'm honest, waiting isn't always easy when you're excited about what comes next.
It's tempting to focus on what isn't happening yet.
The gardens that haven't been planted.
The projects that haven't started.
The dreams that still exist on paper.
But gardening has a way of teaching patience.
A seed doesn't become a flower overnight.
A tree doesn't provide shade the year it's planted.
And a vision doesn't become reality the moment it's imagined.
So while we wait, we're planning.
We're refining ideas.
We're imagining future gardens, workshops, flower fields and gathering spaces.
We're thinking about the experiences we want people to have when they visit.
And perhaps most importantly, we're remembering why we started.
Because Hazelwood Grove was never just about creating a beautiful place.
It's about creating a place where people can connect with nature, learn new skills, celebrate special moments and make memories.
Sometimes growth happens above the ground.
Sometimes growth happens beneath the surface.
Right now, we're in the beneath-the-surface season.
And that's okay.

I don't remember much about my grandmother on my father's side. She wasn't around when I was born, but when my brother came along, our family reunited and made up for lost time. We spent time with them at their motel in Tauranga Bay, creating memories that otherwise might never have been made before she passed when I was 9 years old.

What I do remember of my grandmother, Hazel, is that she was an incredible cook. Her rice pudding remains something I've never been able to recreate, no matter how many times I've tried. She was also a talented gardener and florist, with a gift for creating beauty both in the kitchen and in the garden.

I have an old photograph of her travelling around the world with her father, a reminder of a life lived with curiosity and adventure. Although my memories of her are few, they are filled with warmth, admiration and lots of ❤️.

One of my favourites trees as a young child was our Weeping Willow in the paddock by the orchard. It was the perfect tree to hide from my mum with its long weeping branches, and so easy to climb high up into the branches. It's also the first tree I bought for Hazelwood Grove. I know exactly where its going to go and will be the perfect photo opportunity for a tender sweet kiss underneath once it grows a little.

Every tree planted at Hazelwood exists because someone believed in the dream.

Sometimes the most important part of a project happens before the real work begins 🌿

At Hazelwood Grove, we're currently in a season of planning, dreaming, and patiently waiting for the next steps to fall into place.

While we wait, we're spending a lot of time imagining what this space could become—a place for weddings, celebrations, garden walks, slow Sunday afternoons, and making memories with family and friends.

It's exciting to think about the gardens we'll plant, the pathways we'll create, and the moments that will one day be shared here.

For those of you who have recently started following along, thank you. It means a lot to have people interested in the journey before the gates have even opened.

If you'd like to be part of Hazelwood from the very beginning, we'd love to welcome you to our newsletter community, where we'll be sharing updates, plans, and opportunities to support the gardens as they grow.

What would you most love to see at Hazelwood Grove in the future? 💛

Part 4 of the plan...
This is all about behind the hydrangea wall, into a flowing garden and the flower farm.
This is probably more exciting. I've already started many seedlings from seed for picking in late spring. Think statice, sweet peas, archillea, cornflowers...add this to zinnia and alstromeria in spring, our roses and then dahlias that will come later in the season.

The Limelight hydrangeas at Hazelwood Grove are going to be something special 🌿

Every summer, the gardens will fill with huge cloud-like blooms in soft lime, cream, and antique blush tones — bringing colour, texture, and that beautiful romantic feel Hazelwood will become known for.

As we continue restoring and growing the gardens, we’re inviting a small number of people to become part of Hazelwood from the very beginning through our Lifetime Garden Pass.

For a one-time payment of $500, founding members will receive:
• Lifetime access to future garden opening days
• Early access to special events and gatherings
• 50% off picking at our flower farm
• A lasting connection to Hazelwood as it grows through the seasons.

This pass is for the people who can already picture themselves wandering the gardens on a slow Sunday afternoon 💛

We can’t wait to open the gates and share it all with you.

Send us a message if you’d like more information about becoming a founding member.

Part 3 - Why I called it Hazelwood "Grove" was because it feels a little like a Grove at the front. And while at the moment it has been cleared, we will be adding back in some natives and large trees to further create that feel of a Grove. It will also sit in behind the hydrangeas and create a little shade.
Last week, I received a delivery of a small tree that will once day grow into a very large tree to go in this space along with many more!

Can you be excited about spring seedlings when we haven't even been through winter yet?

Ranunculus, sweet peas, cornflowers, Ranunculus (oh whoops did I say that twice?🤔), statice, scabiosa and Ranunculus (damn thrice?). Yes thats right! Ive saved so many Ranunculus seeds over the years and theyve all popped up!!

Our flower farm is going to have a lot of flowers ready for spring picking! Did I tell you about the daffodils? Ohhhhhhh yes!

Part 2 of the plan...even though the plan has changed slightly...this part is still the same!
Its exciting and nerve wracking to think 1) there's a lot of work to get done and 2) we've only just started.
