Do you hit High Quality Shots?

Try to hit the ball with good height, depth and spin so it goes up at the baseline.

Otherwise, your opponent is able to hit the ball at the ideal hitting zone.

Med Ball Pullover Variations for Tennis by

We do a fair amount of pullover activities. They are mostly inspired by track & field throwing events (javelin in particular, as the overhead demands are most relatable to the tennis serve).

And that’s exactly why we perform these types of movements, for the serve (see image from a few posts back).

These are only a couple examples by and , but many others exist when it comes to MB pullover work. For instance, we can also perform them:

- with a pause, reactive or continuous

- with lighter or heavier med balls

- sub-maximally for more elastic purposes or maximally for more power

- unilaterally or bilaterally

- with a twisting action

Truthfully, you won’t find any research on this (at least not with reference to tennis). But I have been seeing the benefits, not only from a power standpoint, but also in terms of improvements in ROM and positions needed during the serve (yes, we are trying to accentuate thoracic extension and no, it’s not bad for your back).

I think we need to tackle these positions under various loading demands - because we see it in the serve (like 150 times per match) and there are lots of forces acting on various joints (and they occur in really really short time frames).

Give these variations a try!

Never be late again

Question: When and how should you prepare for a forehand/backhand?

Answer: keep your racket behind you (with racket up) around shoulder height when the ball bounces on your side.

If you do that, you are:
- no longer in trouble preparing for your shot;
- you get a correct rhythm in your stroke;
- And you get confidence in your strokes because it works.

Being prepared is 🔑.

The return is underrated

But why?
A lot of people think a return and baseline shot (forehand/backhand) is the same.
But it's not.
The return of serve is more difficult than a baseline shot because of the ball you could receive.

You have to control a more powerful shot, it's difficult to see where the ball is coming and you start from an awkward position.
Thereby, the return is the most important shot in tennis after the service.
You are lucky if your opponent hits a double fault but otherwise, you always must hit a return to win a point.
To master the return:
1. Read the serve of your opponent.
2. Make a split-step.
3. Stay in balance.
4. Don't bring your racket back too much
And much more!
Make sure you train and master the return.
