To our great regret, Maria João Pires has decided to end her concert career permanently due to a neurological condition and to cancel her duo recital with Marc-André Hamelin at Amare - Den Haag

Together with Marc-André Hamelin, we are seeking a suitable date in the 2026/2027 season and look forward to presenting him to you at De Nieuwe Kerk.

With quiet sadness, and above all with deep gratitude, we share that Maria João Pires has decided to bring her extraordinary international concert career to a close, following a neurological condition earlier this year.

A profound decision, taken with the same grace and integrity that have defined her music for more than six decades. Her art was pure and deeply expressive — listening, breathing, honest. She touched audiences not through grandeur, but through truth.

In the Netherlands, Maria João Pires found listeners who embraced her poetic musicality from the very beginning, and her performances on the stage of World Master Pianists have created unforgettable memories — right up to her final recital on 19 March this year.

Ticket sales for her upcoming World Master Pianists concert with Marc-André Hamelin on April 20th have been suspended while we process the program change. We will inform the public as soon as more information becomes available.

Unfortunately, Maria João Pires planned recital on 30 June in the Nieuwe Kerk has been cancelled due to medical circumstances. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return in the ’25-‘26 season.

We are deeply saddened by the news that piano legend Alfred Brendel passed away yesterday at his home in London. Alfred Brendel will live on in our hearts. We are grateful for all the unforgettable moments we were able to share with him. We will remember him as a warm-hearted person with a great sense of humour. As a musician, he has left behind a legacy that will forever remain a milestone in the world of music 🕊️
