She did not know what she wanted the cake to look like. She just knew it had to feel like her daughter.

First birthday cake order from a new customer.

Brief: "My daughter is turning 5. She loves butterflies and the colour yellow. She is the loudest, happiest child you will ever meet."

I did not ask for a reference photo.

I already had everything I needed.

Bright yellow. Hand-placed butterflies in different sizes. A small chaos of colour that felt joyful , not perfect.

Because her daughter was not perfect.

She was loud and happy.

The cake should match.

On collection day the mother opened the box.

Then she said: "That is my daughter in a cake."

That is the job.

Everything you need to know before ordering a wedding cake in Lagos. A complete honest guide from a baker.

Wedding cake orders are the most emotionally high-stakes orders we receive.

And they are the ones where most disappointments come from a gap in communication early in the process.

Here is everything you need to know before you place your order.

TIMELINE
Minimum four weeks before the wedding date. Six to eight weeks is strongly preferable. This allows proper design consultation and dedicated production time without rushing.

Any baker confirming a wedding cake in less than two weeks is taking a risk with your day.

FLAVOUR ACROSS TIERS
For large weddings with multiple tiers, you can offer different flavours per tier. This requires clear communication upfront so each tier is properly labelled during serving.

DELIVERY VERSUS COLLECTION
In Lagos heat, delivery to the venue with setup is almost always the better choice. Transporting a wedding cake in a personal vehicle introduces risks that professional delivery minimises.

VENUE COORDINATION
Your baker needs to know who to contact at the venue, what table or surface the cake will sit on, and approximately what time it needs to be in place.

THE DEPOSIT
A deposit confirms your booking and your date. Get a written confirmation of every agreed detail before you pay anything.

We walk through all of this with every wedding cake client before we confirm a single order.
Because your wedding day deserves that level of attention.

Planning a wedding? DM us your date as early as possible. The earlier the conversation, the better the result.

The pressure to have a perfect Instagram-worthy cake is ruining Nigerian celebrations. Here is why I believe this strongly.

I am going to say something that might surprise you coming from a baker.

The obsession with Instagram-worthy cakes is making some celebrations worse , not better.

A significant number of people ordering custom cakes are now choosing designs based primarily on what will photograph well rather than what will taste good, serve their specific guest list appropriately, or fit the actual tone of their celebration.

They are optimising for the thirty-second moment when the cake is brought out and everyone takes a photo.

They are not thinking about the two hours when the cake is being eaten.

A hyper-elaborate fondant sculpture that photographs dramatically is not always appropriate for a children's birthday party where the children want to actually eat cake , not look at an art installation.

A towering six-tier cake is not always the right call for an intimate family celebration where the visual scale overwhelms the occasion rather than complementing it.

The best cakes I have made , the ones where clients come back, refer their friends, and talk about the cake for years , are almost never the most elaborate ones.

They are the most appropriate ones.
Appropriate to the person. Appropriate to the occasion. Appropriate to the guests.
And genuinely delicious.

That is the standard worth aiming for.
Not the most shareable image.
The most memorable experience.

Do you agree? Tell me in the comments what matters most when you are choosing a celebration cake.

A customer ordered from us once. Then she sent her daughter. Then her daughter sent her colleague. Here is the full referral chain , and what started it.

It started with a simple birthday cake in January.
She had found us through a search. No strong recommendation. Just our page and a decision to try.

She collected the cake. Said thank you. We said happy birthday.
That should have been the end.

In March her daughter reached out.
"My mother said I must order from Debby Paradize Koncept for my baby's naming ceremony cake. She said do not bother looking anywhere else."

We made the naming ceremony cake.
In April the daughter's colleague sent a message.
"My friend showed me her naming ceremony photos and I asked about the cake specifically. She sent me your number."

We made that colleague's anniversary cake.
In May the colleague's husband reached out about his mother's 70th birthday.

One cake in January.
Four separate orders by May.

Three generations of events connected by word of mouth from a single delivery.
I have thought about what started this chain.

Not the visual design of the first cake , though it was good.

What started this chain was that the first customer felt we had understood what she came to us for.
That is what makes people tell other people.

Not the product.
The feeling of being properly taken care of.

DM us your event date. Let us take proper care of your celebration , the way we take care of every single one.

Tell me the most Nigerian thing that has ever happened at a celebration cake cutting. I will go first ,.and it gets better from there.

I will go first.
I delivered a birthday cake to a celebration last year.

Beautiful three-tier. The birthday celebrant had been very specific about the design.
I set it up. Took a photo. Left.

An hour later the client sent me a message.
"Debby. Someone's child has already touched the cake."

Not cut it. Touched it.
With full hand pressure on the second tier.
A small handprint. Clearly visible.

I asked if they wanted me to come back and fix it.
She said: "No. We decided to call it a signature.

The child is five. This is now the official memory of the party."

A handprint on the second tier of a three-tier birthday cake.

Now a cherished memory.
This is Nigerian celebrations.
Planned down to every detail.
And then a five-year-old happens.

Now your turn.

What is the most Nigerian thing that has ever happened at a celebration cake cutting?

I want the full story in the comments.

The three cake flavours that work for every Nigerian celebration , and the one most people choose that actually disappoints half the room.

After making cakes for birthdays, weddings, naming ceremonies, and graduations across Lagos , I have noticed patterns in flavour choices worth sharing.

THE THREE THAT ALWAYS WORK
VANILLA SPONGE WITH SWISS MERINGUE BUTTERCREAM

The safest, most universally loved combination for mixed-age Nigerian celebrations.

Light enough for children and elegant enough for adults. Not too sweet , which matters because Nigerian celebrations typically serve a lot of other sweet things.

If you are feeding a room ranging from age 2 to 75 ,.this is your answer.

LEMON SPONGE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

The surprise option that becomes everyone's favourite.

Most people who have never tried it are sceptical. People who have tried it never order anything else again.

The slight tartness cuts through the richness of heavy party food. Particularly good for afternoon or outdoor celebrations in Lagos heat.

CHOCOLATE WITH DARK GANACHE

The adult celebration option.
Rich, deeply flavoured, not overly sweet. Works perfectly for 30th, 40th, 50th birthday celebrations and events where the guest list is primarily adults.

THE ONE THAT DISAPPOINTS HALF THE ROOM
Red velvet with standard sweet buttercream.

Red velvet looks spectacular , the colour contrast when you cut it is genuinely beautiful. But standard sweet buttercream makes it overwhelming in quantity.

The fix: red velvet with cream cheese frosting. The tanginess of the cream cheese balances the sweetness completely.

She ordered a cake for her daughter's graduation. Then she said something to me during pickup that I want every baker to hear.

Her daughter was graduating from university.
First in the family to do it.
She had been planning this celebration for months.

She told me during our consultation that every detail had to be perfect , not because she was picky, but because this moment had been a long time coming.

Her family had sacrificed for this degree.
The celebration had to match the weight of what it meant.

I took that seriously.

We designed a cake in her daughter's faculty colours. Her name in a classic script. Her graduation year. Clean, elegant, emotionally intentional.

On collection day she arrived early.
She saw the cake.

Then she turned to me and said: "You understood that this is not just a cake."

Six words.

A birthday cake is a moment of joy.

A graduation cake is a moment of arrival.
A wedding cake is a moment of commitment.
A naming ceremony cake is a moment of beginning.

Every celebration cake carries the emotional weight of what is being marked.

That weight is not just decoration and sponge.
It is the whole story of why this day matters.

We never forget that.
Not for a single order.

Tell us what is being celebrated. We will make a cake that matches the weight of the moment. DM us your event date.

Planning a celebration in the next 60 days? Here is the exact timeline you need to follow for a cake that is actually ready when you need it.

Most cake disappointments come from ordering too late.
Here is the honest timeline that protects your celebration.

FOR BIRTHDAY CAKES
Simple design, standard size:
Minimum 1 week. Comfortable is 2 weeks.

Custom design with specific theme, multiple tiers, or detailed decorations:

Minimum 2 weeks. Comfortable is 3 weeks.
If your event is on a Saturday or Sunday , add 3 to 5 extra days. Weekend dates book fastest.

FOR WEDDING CAKES

Minimum 4 weeks. This is not negotiable for a properly made wedding cake.

A wedding cake requires design consultation, sourcing decisions, dedicated baking and decoration time.

Any baker confirming a wedding cake with less than 2 weeks notice is either turning down other work or cutting corners on yours.

6 to 8 weeks is comfortable and gives you the best result.

FOR NAMING CEREMONIES AND OTHER EVENTS
2 weeks minimum for anything with a specific theme.
1 week is possible for simple designs if we have availability.
These timelines protect you , not us.

They exist so your cake is made with full attention, properly rested layers, properly set decoration, and a baker who is not rushing.

Reach out early.
Your celebration is worth it.

DM us your event date right now , even if it feels too early. Availability fills faster than you expect.

A beautiful cake that tastes average is not a good cake. It is just a pretty disappointment. And I will stand on this.

The culture of cake content on social media has created an expectation that a stunning visual is the primary measure of a good cake.

Elaborate tiers. Intricate fondant work. Perfectly smooth surfaces. Sculpted decorations that look like anything except cake.

These things have real value. Visual impact at a celebration matters.
But the cake gets cut.
And when it gets cut , your guests taste it.

A visually impressive cake that is dense, dry, too sweet, or flavourless does not leave people with a good memory of the celebration.

It leaves them with the specific disappointment of something that looked like it would be wonderful and was not.

The best cake I can make for your celebration does both.
One that makes your guests stop when it comes out of the box , and stop again when they take a bite.

Both. Not one or the other.

At Debby Paradize Koncept we spend as much time on the recipe and the technique as we do on the decoration.

Because the decoration is what people photograph.
But the taste is what they remember.

Do you agree? Tell me what matters most to you when you order a celebration cake , look, taste, or both equally?

She told four people about us before she even collected her own cake. Here is that story.

She came to us for her sister's birthday cake.
During the consultation she was thorough. She asked a lot of questions. She clearly cared about getting it right.

On collection day she arrived with her phone out.
Not to take photos of the cake , though she did that too.

She had three voice notes queued up to send to people while she was still standing at the door.
She said: "I told three people about you before I even saw the finished cake. I told them based on the consultation alone.

Based on the consultation alone.
Not the cake. Not the taste. Not the delivery.
The way she was treated during the planning process.

The questions we asked. The way we listened. The honesty about what was and was not possible.

The confirmation of every detail before we began.
She said: "I knew the cake would be right because the process felt right."
By the time she left she had already told four people.

Her sister's cake had not even been cut yet.
The work we put into the conversation before we bake is as important as the work we put into the baking.
This is why.

DM us your event date and experience the kind of consultation that makes people tell their friends before the cake is even ready.
